Albury-Wodonga Environmental Advisory Management Committee
Structure and Terms of Reference in brief:
As part of a suite of initiatives intended to move Charles Sturt University towards environmentally sustainable operation a network of campus based Environmental Advisory Management Committees (EAMC's) are being established. The intent of this initiative is to employ a collaborative approach by working with University staff and students to:
- Help to develop appropriate environmental targets and initiatives given the serious nature of environmental problems.
- The input of staff and students who have on-ground knowledge and expertise to draw on is seen as essential because it will be staff and students who will have to help CSU realize the strategies.
Membership
Professor Gail Whiteford, Wes Ward, Penny Davidson, Peter Jones, Peter Taylor, Peter Barrett, Maumita Bhattacharya, Caoimhin Ardren, David Valentine, John Rafferty.
Initiatives and projects
Over the past twelve months the committee has:
- supported Albury-Wodonga students to travel to attend a Students of Sustainability conference, hosted by the University of Western Australia in July 2007.
- in conjunction with the Division of Facilities Management undertaken audits of energy consumption, water use and waste management. Several immediate changes have resulted. For example, as a result of this audit the campus has made a savings on gas consumption because we have switched the system from manual to thermostat control. The campus is looking at reticulating tank water to the grey water ponds rather than using potable water. We have also received a guarantee from Cleanaway that unless recycled material is contaminated it will always go on to be processed as recycled material. The Ecolab has tested the campus composted material and found that it meets the DA’s requirements.
- Established links with other campus committees through ‘Chair of EAMC’ video-conferences, and hope to hold a general meeting of university-wide members and relevant student representation in late 2007 or early 2008.
- Starting August 2007, we will post a ‘Tip of the month’ on ‘What’s new and news’. The August tip is: All – double-side our print jobs, or print drafts onto discarded paper with only one side printed; Subject Coordinators - ask students to double side their assignments.
- Albury-Wodonga campus has joined Wagga campus in aiming to produce zero off-campus waste.
