Coat of Arms

coatThe Coat-of-Arms was granted by Letters Patent to Charles Sturt University by the College of Arms in 1989.

The Coat-of Arms bears the arms of the University at the centre. The helm sits above the arms showing a knight's helmet crowned with three golden stars atop of which sits the crest - a lion holding three keys. The mantling is dressed in green and gold at either side of the helm and arms. 'For the Public Good', the University's motto, is inscribed to the Motto Scroll at the base of the arms.

University Arms

armsThe University Arms, or shield, forms part of the Coat-of-Arms and consists of the following elements:

Open Book

The open book is a traditional symbol of a university, reflecting the objects of the University to promote, within the limits of the University's resources, scholarship, research, free inquiry, the interaction of research and teaching, and academic excellence.

Waves

The three waves depict the three Australian rivers, the Macquarie, Murrumbidgee and Murray rivers, all of which are located in the regions served by the University and were explored by Charles Sturt. These rivers flow through the cities of Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst, Dubbo and Wagga Wagga where the University has campuses and are important to the economic and social well-being of all our campuses throughout western and south western NSW, and northern Victoria.

Sturt Desert Pea

The Sturt Desert Pea, or Swainsona Formosa, is the floral emblem of the University and is central to the shield design. The species is a member of the pea family, Fabaceae, and being native to Australia reflects the University's reputation as a national institution. The Pea was named for the explorer Charles Sturt, in whose honour the University is also named.

University Motto

mottoFor the public good

The name of the University honours the noted explorer, soldier and public servant Charles Sturt.

Commenting on his own commitment to exploration, Sturt wrote:

A wish to contribute to the public good led me to undertake those journeys which cost me so much ... I sought that career, not, I admit, without a feeling of ambition as should ever pervade a soldier's breast, but chiefly with an earnest desire to promote the public good, and certainly without any hope of any other reward than the credit due to the successful enterprise.

In the traditional of exploration, learning, inquiry and discovery as embodied in the life and work of Charles Sturt, the University has as our motto - for the public good.
