The use of ionising radiation is governed by the Radiation Control Act (NSW) 1990 and its regulations. The acquisition of radioactive material or irradiating apparatus must also be approved by the Radiation Safety Committee before the material of apparatus is brought into the University or used by University staff/students. If your research involves the use of Humans, you should also review the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Research Involving Humans, released by the National Health and Medical Research Council and the CSU Research & Graduate Home Page.
It is important that the Principal Investigator completes Sections 4 through to 7 in sufficient detail to allow assessment of their research proposal and to prevent any undue delays. This form must be signed by the Principal Investigator before submission to the Radiation Safety Committee.
A proposal must be submitted to the Radiation Safety Committee before the start of the Research Proposal. Where the work is carried out in more than one organisation, the Radiation Safety Committee or Radiation Safety Officer of the other organisation must be informed as well.
All projects that involve exposure of Humans to Ionizing Radiation for Research Purposes must be submitted to the Radiation Safety Committee for approval PRIOR to submitting to the Ethics in Human Research Committee.
The Radiation Safety Committee will check the information provided regarding the proposed material/apparatus, the physical facilities to be used and the details of the members of the project team. It will then make its assessment of the proposal with regard to the proposed level of radiation safety, and the adequacy of the experience of the members of the team for carrying out the proposed work.
Work assessed by the Principal Investigator may commence after the proposal has been assessed and approved by the Radiation Safety Committee. Work must be conducted only in approved laboratories or in an area or manner approved by the Radiation Safety Committee.
Work must not commence without the specific approval of the Radiation Safety Committee.
The Principal Investigator must ensure that any recommendations of the Radiation Safety Committee are met during the course of the work.
