Student Success Team

The Student Success Team (SST) aims to reduce attrition amongst first year, domestic, undergraduate students from Low Socio-Economic Status (Low SES) backgrounds and students from the Student Transition and Retention (STAR) courses throughout CSU.

Proactive mentoring and the provision of timely, accurate information will be used to increase student engagement with the aim of increasing progress and reducing attrition. The SST employs a group of students who make phone calls to identified students as part of a number of campaigns. These calls are designed to provide mentoring to the students as well as to advise them of the support services that are in place to help them.

The SST undertakes 6 campaigns each session, as outlined below:

  1. Welcome to CSU - for all Low SES and all STAR students commencing at CSU
  2. Students who have not accessed their subject outlines leading up to the HECS census date - for all Low SES and STAR in their first year
  3. Students who trigger an event in their STAR course (failed assignment, missed tutes, etc)
  4. Low SES or STAR students who fail a subject in their first session
  5. Students at risk of exclusion - all students who receive an risk of exclusion notice
  6. Exit Interviews - for all Low SES or STAR students who withdraw from CSU

Each successful phone call to a student is followed up with a detailed action plan, individualised based on the phone call with the student. The action plan will also contain links to CSU services as appropriate. After a number of unsuccessful phone contacts students receive a generic action plan via email to help solve common problems associated with each campaign.

SST members direct students to a range of support services already in place at CSU. All SST members know the range of support services available and what service is appropriate to deal with different types of student problems. The SST utilises services from Student Central, Academic Support, Student Services Office, Student Administration, Accommodation, the Library and other areas of the university. By providing the right mix of services we can solve a wide range of student problems over the phone and can make appointments for students to see professionals as required.
