- Albury Regional Museum
-
Spend time at the Albury Regional Museum which is
located just before the river.
This would have been a most opportune site, when
the only way to cross the river ( by punt directly below) was
delayed. When custom duties were imposed between the States,
workmen crossing the river could pay several times on items such
as tobacco and tea, while much gold was confiscated from the
Chinese making their way to the Snowy Rushes of the 1860's
from the Chiltern, Rutherglen and Beechworth strikes. The
collection of duties meant dearer goods to the border people and
was the cause of much indignation and protest until the end of
the century and Federation of the States.
The museum regularly holds exhibitions depicting aspects of
the regions past, as well as hosting travelling exhibitions from
other museums.
Communication, transport and social life of the district are on
permanent display.
Bonegilla - the migrant experience, is a
permanent exhibition designed to give visitors an insight into
the situation experienced by migrants after WWII. It is of
special interest to those many migrants and their children who
came to Bonegilla in the years between 1947 and 1971.
