Mt. Buffalo National Park

History
Named by explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell in 1842, the mountain looked like a buffalo from a distance.
The Mt Buffalo Chalet was originally built in 1910 by the Victorian Railway, on the edge of a 35 square kilometres Granite plateau, part of the Mt Buffalo National Park in the north east of Victoria, a comfortable 4 hours drive from Melbourne.

---Image---Central to the park is the Buffalo Plateau.
Like an island in the sky, 1347m above sea level, the top of the mountain is a granite plateau, snow covered in winter, filled with wildflowers, and wildlife in the summer. Magnificent views from the top of the gorge, down over the river valley and across to the high country.

Convention Centres
The recently restored and renovated Mt Buffalo Chalet is available for conferences, weddings, or parties, with all needs catered for.
 
Accommodation
Your stay at Mt Buffalo National Park can involve sleeping bags or linen sheets, baked beans or veal florentine.
Lake Catani Camping Ground near the shore of Lake Canani there are 60 campsites, set among the Snow Gums, some are 'walk-in only', basic facilities are provided.
Snow camping is also possible at the Lake Catani camping ground, permits are available from the ranger or the information centre.
Tatra Inn provides self-contained motel style accommodation, including licensed restaurant and bar.
Bunk room accommodation is available to suit ski or school groups.
The Chalet where guests can enjoy the "old world charm" of the beautiful building, relax by the log fires in huge leather lounges and dine in the Grand Dining Room Complex with antique silver settings, while having access to all the luxuries found in any modern resort.
The Chalet will accommodate 180 in first class surroundings.
 
Travel
From Albury-Wodonga 1 1/2 hours drive by car, buses run a regular service in the snow season.
From Melbourne, 320km, travel north along the Hume Highway to Wangaratta, then follow the Ovens Highway to Porepunkah.
From Sydney, 690km, travel south along the Hume Highway to Wodonga, then follow the Kiewa Valley Highway to the Ovens Highway at Myrtleford and to Porpunkah.
 
Sight Seeing
An abundance of wildlife, tumbling waterfalls spectacular views of the Alps and surrounding valleys, this is the place for all seasons.

When the snow arrives in winter the mountain takes on a different character. A magnificent winter playground for the young and older alike.
Slopes are ideal for beginners and families. There are numerous and well maintained trails and runs as well as playgrounds, a few with details: Dingo Dell (1370m) is 6km south of The Chalet. Ideal for beginners and family groups, this ski area served by two poma lifts and a portable beginners' lift. Cresta (1525m) is 4km south of Dingo Dell. There are 8 runs served by 5 lifts catering for beginners, intermediate and advanced skiers.
Services include ski hire, ski school, restaurant, cafe, ski and souvenir shop, first aid, toilets and telephones.
There is also a permanent display covering different aspects of the park's natural and cultural history. Cross Country Skiing on Mt Buffalo is ideal due to its gentle undulating and picturesque landscape. There are 9km of marked ski trails, 5km of which are groomed. Downhill Skiing here is ideally suited to the beginners and family groups, as it is one of the most affordable sites in Australia.
 
Entertainment
There is always entertainment of an evening - pool competitions, quiz and trivia nights, bands, night walks, films and so on.
 
Leisure
If the old buildings don't provide enough space for guests to escape, there is plenty outside.
Those looking for adventure and fresh air can try abseiling, rock climbing, canoeing, bushwalking, mountain bike riding, horse riding, wilderness photography courses and both downhill and cross country skiing.
