The Dam is situated just below the junction of the
Murray and Mitta Mitta Rivers 16km west of Albury on
the New South Wales and Victorian border.
Construction of the wall began after World War 1, an
engineering project so big it captured the imagination
of the country. When completed in 1936, it was the
biggest dam in the southern hemisphere and one of
the worlds largest.
1961 saw the extension of the dam to its current capacity,
holding approximately six times that of Sydney Harbour.
The waters from Lake Hume supply a 50 megawatt
hydro-electric station and almost four million
megalitres of water per year to irrigation schemes
and individual pumpers across three states.
