What our students say

Patricia Seifert
"CSU has more of a practical focus than many other universities. There is involvement in real problems in the community. By doing distance education, I encountered a broad range of people from different backgrounds and enjoyed sharing input on forums, journaling, reflective practice and audio presentations. The wide choice of electives offered at CSU provide opportunities to extend your knowledge to the business of aged care through legal, policy, leisure for the elderly and health service management subjects. This provides a vital link between industry and government."

Master of Health Science (Gerontology)

About studying Humanities and Social Sciences at CSU

CSU’s courses in the Humanities and Social Sciences provide a broad introduction to academic inquiry and a strong basis for a variety of careers. We offer a number of discipline areas, from social work and social welfare to philosophy, history and sociology, and CSU is the only University to offer accredited Social Work awards through distance education.

Students will develop skills in critical thinking, academic argument and communication, all of which are required to make a significant contribution to and engage with contemporary society. Graduates will be able to conduct efficient research and undertake the assessment and interpretation of evidence. Employers in a range of fields welcome the flexibility and breadth of outlook produced by these foundation skills combined with specialist vocational training.

Many graduates specialise or undertake postgraduate study to gain qualifications in areas as varied as education, journalism, librarianship, management, social welfare, psychology and criminology in order to explore their own interests and prepare for specialised employment.

Whatever your chosen path, study in this area produces compassionate, adaptable professionals with a love of lifelong learning and the ability to forge ahead in new areas of research and professional practice.

If you have an interest in human activity - social, occupational, economic, political, literary or otherwise - CSU’s courses in the Humanities and Social Sciences are for you.
