CSU's Graduate Diploma of Adult and Vocational Education enables people with a range of technical or vocational qualifications and experience to teach in a range of settings.

The Graduate Diploma of Adult and Vocational Education is related to:


  • Why study this course?

    If you have already established a career in a particular vocational or professional role, and are now seeking to move into a training position and you have a Bachelor degree (or can demonstrate equivalent experience), this course is for you. This course will also suit you if you are a manager in an organisation with HR responsibilities and you wish to develop the expertise to maximise the development of the people in your organisation.

    CSU's Graduate Diploma of Adult and Vocational Education meets the professional needs of students with vocational qualifications who want to teach in their discipline area in an adult learning environment. It is designed for people employed, or seeking employment as trainers, learning facilitators or consultants in the adult and vocational education sectors, including Registered Training Organisations. The Graduate Diploma is an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level eight award, and as such you will be ahead of the curve in an increasingly competitive training and assessment employment market. Graduates will develop an awareness of social justice and equity policies and their application in a range of teaching and learning environments such as Indigenous, refugee and migrant education and training strategies.

    The course is offered online, providing students with the flexibility to study at a time and place that suits their work and family commitments, with access to a wide range of learning materials, support and communication tools online. Students may choose to exit with the Graduate Certificate in Adult and Vocational Education after the completion of four 8 point subjects.

    The Graduate Diploma provides a pathway to the Master of Adult and Vocational Education for students that want to further develop their professional expertise in the field of adult and vocational education.

  • Career opportunities

    CSU's Graduate Diploma of Adult and Vocational Education equips graduates with the knowledge and skills to enhance teaching in their technical or vocational area. Graduates develop expertise teach across a broad spectrum of adult and vocational education institutions, including; TAFE, Registered Training Organisations (both government and private), community and other voluntary organisations, work in industry as teachers, trainers, lecturers, learning facilitators or vocational education consultants, or work as a HR manager with training and assessment responsibilities.

    Completion of this Graduate Diploma allows a pathway into the Master of Adult and Vocational Education, allowing students to further develop their understanding of Adult and Vocational Education. Attainment of a Master of Education further extends employability into higher education organisations and potentially leads to positions undertaking educational research.

  • Credit and pathways

    Credit for prior learning and credit for current competencies will be granted to eligible applicants.

    More about Credit

    For students who have completed, or can provide evidence they are currently completing the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment a standard credit package will be issued. This is represented as VET02C  Certificate IV TAE40110 Credit - 16 subject points and will appear as a FCR conditional upon the successful completion of EEB441 The Reflective Practitioner.

    (NOTE: Student who receive the VET02C Forward Credit (FCR) on entry must have completed the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and provided a copy of their Certificate and transcript prior to enrolling in EEB441).

    Other credit arrangements include:

    • If a student is in the process of completing the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment then proof of enrolment in this course needs to be provided at the point of Application for Admission.
    • Students who do not fully complete the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment will have the VET02C Certificate IV TAE40110 Credit - 16 subject points Forward Credit rescinded and will be required to complete the full 'Without TAE40110' course program.
    • Students who do not possess the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment before entering, will be required to undertake the complete CSU Adult and Vocational Education course, which has the TAE40110 embedded within it. At the end of the course (provided all the relevant subjects are successfully completed through full enrolment and study with the University) students can apply to CSU Advance, the University's Registered Training Organisation, for the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment to be issued. This credential attracts a fee and further inquiries can be made direct to CSU Advance by email to csutraining@csu.edu.au
    • Students who possess the BSZ98 Certificate IV in Assessment & Workplace Training or the TAA40104 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment only, have the option of completing the whole CSU Adult and Vocational Education course, or upgrading to the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment (either through CSU Training or any RTO that offers it) and then enter the Graduate Diploma of Adult and Vocational Education with the TAE40110 and apply for the VET02C Certificate IV TAE40110 16 subject points credit (as indicated above).
    • Credit for a partially completed (with no intention to fully complete) TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment will not be granted.
    • Credit for a TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment will not be granted following admission to the Grad DIpAdult&VocEd program. Due to the nature of the specific course structures it is not possible for this credit to be retrospective and must therefore be applied for at the point of admission.

    For students who commenced their course with CSU before Autumn Session 2006 then the following arrangements apply:

    • The TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment was not addressed in the previous course structures.
    • If students held the BSZ98 Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training or TAA40104 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment upon entry they may now consider upgrading to the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment.
    • If students upgrade to the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment while studying a VET program under the pre-2006 course structure no credit will be granted towards the Graduate Diploma of VET.

    Formal arrangements for the award of the Certificate IV in Training & Assessment (TAE40110) have been made with CSU Advance.

    Students from the Australian Defence Forces will receive credit for entry level vocational credit and specified subject(s) comprising:

    • EPT332 Training in Adult and Vocational Education - 8 points TCR based on completion of the - ARMY Training Supervisor Course or – the ARMY Recruit Instructor Course and the ARMY Junior Leader Course. The 8 points will be represented on the transcript as a Transfer Credit (TCR).

    • EPT333 Assessment in Adult and Vocational Education - 8 points TCR based on completion of the ARMY Qualified Assessor Course and the ARMY Recruit Instructor Course. The 8 points will be represented on the transcript as a Transfer Credit (TCR).

    • EPT331 Workplace Training – 8 points TCR based on completion of the - ARMY Junior Leader Course. The 8 points will be represented on the transcript as a Transfer Credit (TCR).

    EPT320 High Level Facilitation Skills for Post Compulsory Education

    Working with Children Check

    All teacher education students in Australia must comply with the working with children legislation requirements of the state / country of where their placement is occurring. Students will be required to provide evidence to the Faculty of Arts and Education’s Professional Experience Unit of a Working with Children Check (WWCC) clearance letter prior to undertaking any placement in a school or early childhood service. The checks are intended to identify people who have convictions for such things as violence or sexual offences and who may put clients'/children’s personal safety or health at risk. Traffic violations and other minor offences are not of interest.

    Prospective students should be aware that not passing a Working with Children Check will make it difficult for them to complete a teacher education course satisfactorily because of the unavailability of suitable school or preschool professional experience placements.

    The Working with Children Check expires every five years. You will be required to ensure it remains current and valid to the end of the final placement in the course. Please note that a WWCC can take an extended period of time, so it is recommended that you commence the process early to prevent timing problems. The Australian Institute of Family Studies provides useful information and links relevant to the Australian states and territories. Information on the current Working with Children Check must be uploaded to the student’s information site on InPlace.

    Graduate Certificate in Adult and Vocational Education

    The course consists of 32 points (equivalent to four 8-point subjects) comprising the VET02C* 16 points forward credit (FCR) - entry credit based on the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment -TAE40110 and two core subjects (16 points). To graduate students need to complete a total of 32 points and will complete the program as detailed below:

To graduate students need to complete a total of 64 points and will complete the program as detailed below:

    These subjects are particularly useful for those people who feel that they may have knowledge gaps and need a refresher because they have not studied for some time. STUDY LINK subjects are free for CSU Commonwealth-supported students as soon as they accept their offer of a place; small fees apply for others. They are non-credit bearing subjects.  A Subject Coordinator assists students with any questions. The full subject list and enrolment forms are on the STUDY LINK website.
  • Academic expectations

    For each 8 point subject at CSU, students should normally expect to spend between 140-160 hours engaged in the specified learning and assessment activities (such as attending lectures or residential schools, assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, assignments or examinations). The student workload for some subjects may vary from these norms as a result of approved course design.

    Students will be assessed on the basis of completed assignments, examinations, workplace learning, or other methods as outlined in specific subject outlines.

    Where applicable, students are responsible for travel and accommodation costs involved in workplace learning experiences, or attending residential schools (distance education students).

    Expectations relating to academic, workplace learning, time and cost requirements for specific subjects are provided in the subject abstracts and in course materials.

    Throughout their studies, CSU students have a responsibility to continue to develop skills in English Language, literacy and numeracy as appropriate to their discipline. This ongoing development will enable students to effectively participate in their course and graduate as competent professionals.
