About the course

In the Faculty of Arts the areas in which research can be conducted include Australian history, Australian literature, communication and culture, drama, fine arts, justice studies and police studies, professional and applied ethics, psychology, sociology, rural social studies, social work, social welfare and social policy and theology.

The program consists entirely of completing an individual research program under supervision. Students are required to develop a research proposal, carry out the research and write a thesis. Students are also required to make presentations of their work at on campus colloquia. Offshore students are required to visit the appropriate campus at least twice during their candidature in order to meet with their supervisor(s) and to present their research.

An applicant to the Doctor of Philosophy degree must hold:

Intending applicants who do not meet the specified admission requirements are encouraged to discuss their qualifications and experience with the Sub-Dean, Graduate Studies before applying.

Applications with a statement describing the applicant's area of interest (approximately 300 words in length) can be lodged at any time within the academic year. Admission to candidature is subject to approval by the Board of Graduate Studies.

When studying by distance education you may receive:

Distance education students usually study two 8 point subjects per semester. More or fewer subjects may be studied in consultation with the Course Coordinator.

Staff & student contact

Teleconferencing
Telephone tutorials are used to supplement face-to-face contact between students and academic staff. Conference calls enable several students, either at home or at a common location, to participate in a group tutorial with academic staff.

Students are encouraged to maintain direct contact with staff by telephone or email. Office telephone numbers and email addresses will be supplied and telephone answering services are available in the offices of Course Coordinators. Students will also be advised of numbers for the School's central telephone answering and facsimile machines.
