To qualify for candidature, applicants would usually be expected to hold a Master degree or an Honours degree with Class 1 or Class 2 (Division 1) taken over a minimum of four years.
Applications are considered by the University in light of availability of places, and resources including facilities and supervision.

Project funding is an important part of a viable project for a research higher degree program. The supervisors of a research higher degree student normally play a major role in developing a budget and funding.
