Master of Education

This course consists of 64 points of study. A maximum of two 8-point level 4 subjects may be chosen. The requirements for the individual Master of Education program and specialisations are listed below.

Master of Education

The general Master of Education (MEd) has two compulsory subjects, namely,

EER504 Education as a Profession in the 21st Century* (which must be undertaken in the first session of study);
EEB503 Reflecting on Education as a Profession in the 21st Century (which must be undertaken in the final session of study); and

With approval from the Course Coordinator, subjects that are suitable and relevant to the aims and objectives of this course, may be selected from within and without the University. A maximum of 32 points/four 8-point subjects may be chosen.

Master of Education (Educational Leadership)

The Master of Education (Educational Leadership) consists of 64 points (or the equivalent of eight 8-point subjects) including two compulsory education subjects, namely, EER504 Education as a Profession in the 21st Century* (which must be undertaken in the first session of study) and EEB503 Reflecting on Education as a Profession in the 21st Century (which must be undertaken in the final session of study). Students must also complete a minimum of 32 points (or the equivalent of four 8-point subjects) from the Educational Leadership specialisation as shown below and a further 16 points (or the equivalent of two 8-point subjects).

Master of Education (Information Technologies)

The Master of Education (Information Technologies) consists of 64 points (or the equivalent of eight 8-point subjects) including two compulsory education subjects, namely, EER504 Education as a Profession in the 21st Century* (which must be undertaken in the first session of study) and EEB503 Reflecting on Education as a Profession in the 21st Century (which must be undertaken in the final session of study). Students must also complete a minimum of 32 points (or the equivalent of four 8-point subjects) from the Information Technologies specialisation as shown below and a further 16 points (or the equivalent of two 8-point subjects).

Master of Education (Contemporary Literacies)

The Master of Education (Contemporary Literacies) consists of 64 points (or the equivalent of eight 8-point subjects) including two compulsory education subjects, namely, EER504 Education as a Profession in the 21st Century* (which must be undertaken in the first session of study) and EEB503 Reflecting on Education as a Profession in the 21st Century (which must be undertaken in the final session of study). Students must also complete a minimum of 32 points (or the equivalent of four 8-point subjects) from the Contemporary Literacies specialisation as shown below and a further 16 points (or the equivalent of two 8-point subjects).

Master of Education (Educational Research)

The Master of Education (Educational Research) consists of 64 points (or the equivalent of eight 8-point subjects) including one compulsory education subject, namely, EER504 Education as a Profession in the 21st Century* (which must be undertaken in the first session of study). Students must also complete a minimum of 32 points (or the equivalent of four 8-point subjects) from the Educational Research specialisation as shown below and a further 24 (or the equivalent of three 8-point subjects) or 16 points (or the equivalent of two 8-point subjects).

Note 1: With the permission of the Course Coordinator, students may be able to substitute one subject in a specialisation (with EEB501 Preparing a Literature Review) or two subjects in a specialisation (with ERP502 Master of Education Project [16 points]). If EEB501 and/or ERP502 are to be included as substitutes the submissions required in these two subjects must be based on a topic related to the specialisation.

Note 2: Before enrolling in ERP502 MEd Project, students are strongly advised to complete EER500 Introduction to Educational Research, EER501 Qualitative Research Methods or EER502 Quantitative Research Methods and EEB501 Preparing a Literature Review.

* Key Subject

EER504 Education as a Profession in the 21st Century is a key subject in all courses.

Graduate Certificate in Education as an exit point

Students wishing to exit from the MEd with a Graduate Certificate must have completed four subjects (32 points).

Enrolment pattern

Because there is a limited number of compulsory subjects in the MEd it is impossible to provide a specific enrolment pattern. The patterns shown below indicate possible patterns of study utilising only Session 1 and Session 2. However, several subjects in the MEd program are also offered in Session 3 and enrolment in this Session is also possible.
