Graduate Diploma of Exercise and Sport Science

Enhance your knowledge and skills

CSU’s Graduate Diploma of Exercise and Sport Science provides students with the skills and knowledge for further progression of their professional aspirations to become accredited as an Exercise Physiologist, or to improve their understanding of exercise science.

Why study this course?

CSU's Graduate Diploma of Exercise and Sport Science equips students with a broad, theoretical and technical knowledge for multiple disciplines within the exercise and sport sciences. The course provides current allied health professionals with the opportunity to become more knowledgeable in exercise and sport science, for subsequent application to their current professional practice. For students whose intention is to eventually aspire to be an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP), this course can provide opportunities to complete important deficits in their prior learning. However, the Graduate Diploma will not be accredited, and it will be the students’ responsibilities to work with the professional body - Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA), to gain Graduate Entry membership in support of their eventual application to a Master level course.

Students will gain a broad cross-section of knowledge in key areas of exercise and sport science as well as the process of science and research including human movement and allied health. They will enhance their knowledge about applications of science to exercise and physical activity for individuals who are healthy and skills in mechanical movement analyses, anatomical movement, and physical fitness assessment. They will also develop strong communication skills by working with individuals in such areas as exercise, health and well-being.

Career opportunities

This course will create opportunities for graduates to advance their career in the field of exercise and sport science, or allow them to gain important prerequisite knowledge for postgraduate education and training in other allied health professions.

Reasons for studying Exercise and Sport Science:

  1. You can tailor the course to suit your specific needs through elective subjects

  2. Improve your knowledge and skills in exercise science for immediate application to your current allied health practice

  3. This course will assist you with obtaining a Graduate Entry Membership with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) and could qualify you for acceptance into a postgraduate course for your eventual Accredited Exercise Physiology (AEP) status.

Workplace learning

There is one subject where students are required to complete a minimum of 140 hours of professional placement in settings catering to apparently healthy clients. These experiences will assist students to fully participate as an emerging professional in the exercise science community, by investigating the operational requirements of the industry, assuming multiple roles and responsibilities, adopting ethical practice and integrating their discipline, practical, interpersonal and reflective knowledge in authentic, real-world professional contexts.

Course structure

Students can choose subjects that are relevant to their interests and career aspirations in areas such as anatomy, biomechanics, fitness testing and physiology.

More about the course structure

Residential school

There will be a compulsory residential school for four subjects held during Session 1.

Graduation requirements

To graduate, students must satisfactorily complete 64 points (the equivalent of eight 8 point subjects).

Academic expectations

For each 8 point subject at CSU, students should normally expect to spend between 140-160 hours engaged in the specified learning and assessment activities (such as attending lectures or residential schools, assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, assignments or examinations). The student workload for some subjects may vary from these norms as a result of approved course design.

Students will be assessed on the basis of completed assignments, examinations, workplace learning, or other methods as outlined in specific subject outlines.

Where applicable, students are responsible for travel and accommodation costs involved in workplace learning experiences, or attending residential schools (distance education students).

Expectations relating to academic, workplace learning, time and cost requirements for specific subjects are provided in the subject abstracts and in course materials.
