What is this course about?

CSU's Master of Health Science aims to promote advanced, critical reflection on professional practice in the health sciences, and to equip graduates with the advanced analytical and conceptual skills required for work in the senior tiers of health science and related sectors.

The Master of Health Science aims to promote advanced, critical reflection on professional practice in the health sciences. This aim has the following components:

  • to provide opportunity for the candidate to continue lifelong learning in keeping with the University's mission statement
  • to satisfy the educational needs of professionals working in or aspiring to work in the most senior tiers of the health sciences and related sectors
  • to promote the acquisition of advanced analytical and problem solving skills and conceptual insights that will enhance the capacity of the candidate to undertake positions of significant responsibility in the health sciences, and
  • to encourage excellence in scholarship and/or focused research within the candidate's discipline area.

Credit

Many students will be given credit for up to 32 points if they have previously completed a four-year undergraduate course in an apposite discipline, or have undertaken relevant postgraduate tertiary studies subsequent to a three-year undergraduate degree.

Graduates of the CSU courses listed under Master of Health Science Admission Requirements will receive 32 points credit on entry to the Master course. Up to 64 points credit may be granted to students who have completed a four-year degree and postgraduate study.

No credit will be granted for the 32 point research component.

MASTER OF HEALTH SCIENCE

The Master of Health Science course of 96 points duration, consists of four components:

Restricted elective coursework subjects (48 points) chosen from a list maintained by the Course Co-ordinator.

The Course Co-ordinator may also approve restricted elective enrolment in other suitable postgraduate subjects (level 4 and above) offered by Charles Sturt University.

One Research Methods/Research Writing subject (8 points)

One Research subject HLT515 Health Science Research Portfolio (32 points)

This research component, leading to the production of a publishable work, will be an investigation that is driven by either the acquisition of new data or the analysis of existing data.

The investigation/research will be conducted under the direction of formally appointed supervisors. The Faculty of Science has the capacity to supervise Master's level students in all fields of research and all discipline areas covered by the Faculty. The Dean or delegated authority shall appoint an appropriately qualified and experienced supervisor and, if appropriate, a co-supervisor from the academic staff of the University. The Dean or delegated authority may also appoint a co-supervisor from outside the University (for example, from industry, the professions or another university or research establishment) if appropriate.

All students will be required to present their work in the form of a portfolio. Such a portfolio will include:

  1. a publishable article ready for submission to a refereed journal, together with the author's guidelines to the chosen journal and reasons for choosing this journal;
  2. a comprehensive review of the relevant literature, which includes a justification for the focal point of the investigation;
  3. application and approval documents from CSU and/or other institutional Ethics in Human Research Committees (if required), and/or if required from other CSU committees such as Radiation Safety, Biosafety and Animal Care & Ethics;
  4. formal research proposal.
  5. a summary overview, linking all aspects of the portfolio into a logical seamless document

In addition, such a portfolio will include any detailed methodology, results and analysis which supports the information presented in the publishable article.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA OF HEALTH SCIENCE (exit point only)

The Graduate Diploma of Health Science exit point only course of 64 points duration, consists of three components:

Restricted elective coursework subjects (48 points) chosen from the Faculty's suite of postgraduate subjects: same list of restricted elective subjects as for the Master's course structure. The Course Co-ordinator may also approve restricted elective enrolment in other suitable postgraduate subjects (level 4 and above) offered by Charles Sturt University.

Articulation

The Master and Postgraduate Diploma make up an articulated set of courses and credit is given in each higher level course for the subjects completed in the lower level course.

Admission requirements

This course is available to applicants who are graduates from a Bachelor level course in a relevant discipline or the following CSU Graduate Certificate/Postgraduate Certificates or Graduate Diplomas (or equivalent from another University):

English language proficiency

Applicants will be deemed to have sufficient English proficiency if they:

  • have completed all their formal studies in one or more of the following countries; or
  • were born in one of the following countries and have completed at least one qualification in one of those countries; or
  • have completed senior secondary study or at least one year of full-time University study in one of the following countries: American Samoa, Australia, Canada, Fiji, Ireland, Kenya, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, United Kingdom, USA, Zambia
    or
  • have successfully completed one year of full-time (or part-time equivalent) post-secondary study at an affiliate institution of the University, with English as the medium of instruction and assessment.

All other applicants must explicitly demonstrate proficiency.

Acceptable tests for English proficiency

Any of the following results, attained within the last two years, can be used to demonstrate English proficiency:

  • an Academic IELTS (International English Language Testing System) overall score of at least 6.0, and with no score below 5.5;
  • a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) paper-based score of 550 and TWE of 5.0;
  • a TOEFL computer-based score of 213 and Essay Rating of 5;
  • a TOEFL internet-based score of 80 for undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programs, and 90 for postgraduate research candidates with a minimum score of 25 in the writing section.
  • a Combined Universities Admission Test (CULT) overall score of at least 65;
  • a C pass in English at the GCE 'A' level examinations in either Singapore or the United Kingdom;
  • completion of the International Baccalaureate diploma with English A2 at higher or sub. Level;
  • a C pass in 'Use of English' in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE);
  • completion of the UNSW Foundation Studies Certificate with a C pass in 'Use of English';
  • completion of an AQF Certificate IV (including English for Academic Purposes);
  • successful completion of at least one year of study in a course at Associate Diploma or Diploma level on the Register of Australian Tertiary Education;
  • a score of 155 in the verbal component of the STAT test;
  • a Pass grade in the Uniworld English College English for Tertiary Entrance course; or
  • IRI Diploma of English.

An applicant who does not otherwise meet the University's requirements may be admitted on the recommendation of the Dean of the appropriate faculty.

Internet access

CSU places great emphasis on services to its students. It is a leader in the provision of online services and, in particular, the use of the internet in the support of teaching, administration and communications with students.

The online environment is so integrated into all aspects of student life and the learning experience at CSU that the University now assumes that all on campus and distance education students at CSU will have ongoing access to an internet connected computer capable of communicating with CSU online systems.

Students enrolled in Information Technology subjects (i.e. with an ITC subject code) may be required to have additional hardware and/or software that is deemed essential for the completion of the learning activities in that subject.
