Graduate Diploma of Inclusive Education

CSU's Graduate Diploma of Inclusive Education is designed for teachers who would like to develop expertise in the inclusive education field.

Why study this course?

CSU's Graduate Diploma of Inclusive Education provides teachers with basic training in special education and the opportunity to increase their status in the teaching profession, obtain four-year trained salaries, increase eligibility for promotion and gain recognition as a teacher with inclusive education professional qualifications.

All CSU qualifications in the area of special education bear nomenclature related to inclusion. This reflects contemporary practice in the field and positions graduates at the forefront of current thinking while retaining a broad-based focus on the traditional scope of preparation in special education.

Practical experience

The development of practical skills is a vital component of this course. Students already employed in some capacity in the field may complete the practicum requirements within their current teaching role if there are children requiring special education in the class.

Note: Candidates may choose to make application to transfer to the Master of Education (Inclusive Education) after having completed the first four subjects at a credit or higher average.

Reasons for studying inclusive education at CSU:

  1. Contemporary research based course recognised by DEC allowing graduates the opportunity to teach in inclusive settings

  2. Thorough grounding in inclusive education that will allow progression to leadership roles if desired

  3. Significant employment opportunities

Credit

Credit is available for subjects previously completed at CSU. This course articulates with the Graduate Certificate in Inclusive education, for which full credit is available. Applications for credit for subjects completed at other institutions will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Credit for subjects successfully studied in this course are available within the Masters of Inclusive Education.

Workplace Learning

Students are required to undertake a 20-day placement in a supervised setting in the subject EPT438. This may be in a current place of employment where judged appropriate by the Course Director.

Academic expectations

For each 8 point subject at CSU, students should normally expect to spend between 140-160 hours engaged in the specified learning and assessment activities (such as attending lectures or residential schools, assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, assignments or examinations). The student workload for some subjects may vary from these norms as a result of approved course design.

Students will be assessed on the basis of completed assignments, examinations, workplace learning, or other methods as outlined in specific subject outlines.

Where applicable, students are responsible for travel and accommodation costs involved in workplace learning experiences, or attending residential schools (distance education students).

Expectations relating to academic, workplace learning, time and cost requirements for specific subjects are provided in the subject abstracts and in course materials.

The course is comprised of eight subjects (64 points): 6 core subjects and 2 elective subjects.
