CSU's Master of Islamic Studies, Graduate Diploma of Islamic Studies and Graduate Certificate in Islamic Studies provide study covering theological, historical, practical, contemporary and spiritual aspects of Islam

About the course

These courses provide a unique combination of the traditional Islamic sciences, study disciplines and contemporary discourse on religion and Islam to provide a balanced perspective of Islamic Studies in today's world. They are designed for students holding an undergraduate degree in a discipline other than Islamic  Studies.

The courses aim to provide students with grounded knowledge and analytical skills in the study of Islam, developing their ability to analyse information about Islamic matters. The students will be provided with an all-encompassing understanding of Islam at an advanced level, covering  theological, legal, social, contemporary and spiritual aspects of Islam.  Students will develop extensive knowledge of Islamic history and be introduced to the Arabic language.

Graduates at Master level will have developed independent research and analytical skills. Graduates will be able to demonstrate critical thinking that will enable them to use theological and research methodologies focused on the area of their research. Students will have the opportunity to develop expertise in a particular field of Islamic Studies.

Graduate Certificate in Islamic Studies

Graduates of this course will be able to:

  • relate traditional Islam to contemporary society
  • demonstrate a grounded introduction to Islamic scientific disciplines
  • demonstrate a good knowledge of Islamic beliefs and spirituality
  • approach Islamic studies via critical analysis method
  • demonstrate research skills in religious and Islamic studies. 

Graduate Diploma of Islamic Studies

Graduates of this course will be able to:

  • relate traditional Islam to contemporary society
  • demonstrate a grounded introduction to Islamic scientific disciplines
  • demonstrate a good knowledge in Islamic beliefs, practices and spirituality
  • demonstrate an introduction to Arabic language
  • demonstrate a good understanding of Islamic history
  • approach Islamic studies via critical analysis method
  • demonstrate research skills in religious and Islamic studies. 

Master of Islamic Studies

Graduates of this course will be able to:

  • relate traditional Islam to contemporary subjects
  • demonstrate a grounded introduction to Islamic scientific disciplines
  • demonstrate a good understanding of Islamic history
  • approach Islamic studies via critical analysis method
  • demonstrate research skills in religious and Islamic studies
  • demonstrate a good understanding of contemporary and traditional scholarship in Islamic Studies
  • demonstrate extensive knowledge within a particular topic area of Islamic Studies.

Academic expectations

For each 8 point subject at CSU, students should normally expect to spend between 140-160 hours engaged in the specified learning and assessment activities (such as attending lectures or residential schools, assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, assignments or examinations). The student workload for some subjects may vary from these norms as a result of approved course design.

Students will be assessed on the basis of completed assignments, examinations, workplace learning, or other methods as outlined in specific subject outlines.

Where applicable, students are responsible for travel and accommodation costs involved in workplace learning experiences, or attending residential schools (distance education students).

Expectations relating to academic, workplace learning, time and cost requirements for specific subjects are provided in the subject abstracts and in course materials.

Residential schools

In every session there will be a two-day residential school supplementing the course material and teaching.

There are optional weekly lectures offered in Sydney at ISRA Centre.

Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree in any discipline.

Other applicants may be admitted at the discretion of the Course Coordinator.

Students enrolled in Information Technology subjects (i.e. with an ITC subject code) may be required to have additional hardware and/or software that is deemed essential for the completion of the learning activities in that subject.
