Master of Medical Radiation Science
What is this course about?
CSU's Master of Medical Radiation Science is designed for practising medical radiation science professionals to advance their technological expertise, academic understanding and to further enhance their clinical skills of their chosen specialisation.
The Master of Medical Radiation Science is offered in five specialist areas: computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, radiographic image interpretation, nuclear medicine and molecular imaging.
In addition students may choose to enrol in the generic course rather than one of the specialisations. The generic Master of Medical Radiation Science course is aimed at radiographers, radiotherapists and nuclear medicine scientists.
Each specialisation and the generic course in this coursework Master program offers the choice between two study pathways. Students choose to follow either the research or the coursework option. The research option includes the study of subjects relevant to the specialisation, a research proposal and project. The aim of the research project is for students to complete a paper that is suitable for submitting to a publication / journal for peer-reviewed publication. Alternatively, the coursework option is intended for students who wish to focus on theory and practice subjects specific to their specialisation, but who do not wish to pursue the research project subjects. Students who choose this option still complete a research methodology subject.
This postgraduate course is designed for practising medical radiation scientists to advance both their technological expertise and academic understanding of the chosen specialisation, whilst continuing clinical work in these areas. The Australian Radiography and Nuclear Medicine professional bodies recognise the value of postgraduate study as a means of keeping pace with rapidly changing technology in these fields, as well as of enhancing research.
On completion of 64 points of study (including any credit granted), students may elect to exit the course with a Graduate Diploma. The Graduate Diploma does not include research project subjects generally found in the Master degree.
The on campus offering is open to international students only, with specialisations in Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging only.
The specialisations
Master of Medical Radiation Science (Computed Tomography)
Recent advances in computed tomography (CT) have made this well-established imaging modality an even more important tool in patient management. The Master of Medical Radiation Science (CT) has been developed for those working in the field of CT. This specialisation covers all aspects of modern CT practice. Students have the opportunity to research some aspect of CT for their final project.
Master of Medical Radiation Science (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
The Master of Medical Radiation Science (MRI) has been developed for those working in magnetic resonance imaging. This specialisation informs students of today's technology and also prepares them for the advances of tomorrow. In the final year, students have a chance to research a topic from MRI.
Master of Medical Radiation Science (Molecular Imaging)
This is a new specialisation which explores the burgeoning field of molecular imaging. It caters specifically to the medical radiation scientists engaged in imaging across the modalities that comprise molecular imaging; PET, SPECT, CT, MRI and ultrasound. Medical imaging and nuclear medicine students will learn the principles and applications of imaging and hybrid imaging technologies in the assessment of biological activity in the body at the molecular level including oncology, neurological and cardiovascular diseases. Recent innovation and development in imaging technology, radiopharmacy (molecular probes), and image-guided therapy are prime focus of this specialisation, and will provide you with a sound platform of knowledge to apply clinically in molecular imaging.
Master of Medical Radiation Science (Radiographic Image Interpretation)
This specialisation will meet the needs of students working in Australia and overseas. It is designed to will give students an in-depth appreciation of medical images, in order to enhance their radiographic practice and allow them to make more informed decisions regarding radiography. This specialisation will also better equip students to give informal verbal radiographic opinions to referring clinicians, within the scope of professional codes of conduct. It will prepare the student for a radiographic reporting role if that is appropriate for the country in which they are working. This specialisation may be done entirely by coursework or may include the research project subjects.
Master of Medical Radiation Science (Nuclear Medicine)
The Master of Medical Radiation Science (Nuclear Medicine) specialisation has been developed for those working in the field of nuclear medicine. The course covers all aspects of modern nuclear medicine practice including advanced instrumentation, radiopharmacy and procedures and CT for nuclear medicine. Elective subjects include areas such as clinical education and management. Students have the opportunity to undertake original research in some aspect of nuclear medicine.
Master of Medical Radiation Science - generic course
If you choose to study the generic stream of CSU’s Master of Medical Radiation Science, you can tailor the program to best suit your individual professional needs and preferences. This flexibility allows you the option of selecting a range of electives from two groups.
Group A includes subjects specific to the Master of Medical Radiation Science such as processes of pathology, image guided therapy, digital imaging technology, MRI, CT and image interpretation subjects.
Group B offers a wide range of subjects from the allied health, marketing and information technology areas such as clinical issues in health, clinical teaching techniques, perspectives on health care systems, ethics, law and medical science, marketing management, systems analysis, ethics and information technology. You will have the option to complete the degree entirely by coursework or by including a research project if desired.
In addition to being available to radiographers and nuclear medicine technologists, the generic course is also open to radiotherapists.

Graduation requirements
To graduate from the Master degree, students must satisfactorily complete 96 points ( the equivalent of 12 subjects) comprising any credit awarded upon admission (in recognition of previous study and experience) and, during enrolment in the course, different combinations of compulsory specialisation subjects, restricted electives and project subjects. The actual subjects required for graduation vary with the specialisation and are listed under course structure.

Credit arrangements
You may be eligible for entry credit of up to 32 points (equivalent to four subjects) with appropriate background. You may also gain credit for specialisation subjects successfully completed at other institutions. Enquiries for credit should be directed to the Program Leader.
The 96-point Master of Medical Radiation Science program is made up of a generic Master of Medical Radiation Science course and specialisations in Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Radiographic Image Interpretation, Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging. Each is run by distance education mode. The CT and MRI specialisations comprise both DE and Internal programs, with the latter catering to targeted groups of international and domestic clientele. The generic course and each DE specialisation consist of core compulsory subjects, along with a small group of restricted electives. In contrast to the specialisations, the generic course has only a small number of core subjects and a large number of restricted electives. The Internal versions of the CT and MRI specialisations only contain compulsory core subjects with no electives.
The generic course and all DE specialisations will have two alternative study pathways, one of which is chosen by the student. These pathways are called the “research option” and the “coursework option”. This option of pathway is not available in the Internal CT and MRI programs. The generic course and all DE specialisations will have three entry levels. These are the zero-point, 16-point and 32-point credit entry levels. These will be referred to as Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3, respectively. The subject points to be earned for a Masters qualification would be: 96 points for Level 1 (zero-point credit entry), 80 subject points for Level 2 (16-point credit entry) and 64 subject points for Level 3 (32-point credit entry). The generic course and all DE specialisations of the Masters course are articulated sets, as they each possess a Graduate Diploma exit point only course. This however, is not the case with the Internal versions of the CT and MRI specialisations, for which there is no Graduate Diploma exit. Students exiting the Masters with a Graduate Diploma will require 64 subject points for Level 1 entry and 48 subject points for Level 2 entry. No Graduate Diploma exit is possible for students with Level 3 entry.
Restricted elective subjects used in the course may be chosen from two banks. These are defined as “Group A” and “Group B”, as discussed in Part A, Field 2.6. The general listings are shown, with the session(s) of offering (Session 1/Session 2/Session 3) of each subject shown in brackets as (1, 2 or 3). Group A consists of subjects taught within the Masters course in different specialisations. These subjects become a restricted elective, when not compulsory in a specialization. The choice of the elective depends on the session and on the specialisation. Conditions that have to be met before doing some elective subjects are indicated. Group B comprises non medical radiation science subjects which have relevance to medical radiation science professionals. These subjects are taught from other schools/faculties.

The structure of each of the five DE Masters specialisations and the generic Master of Medical Radiation Science course, will first be presented. Following this, the structure of the two Internal mode programs within the CT and MRI specialisations will be given. While the latter are classed as versions of the CT and MRI specialisations, they are specially mounted programs for targeted international and domestic clientele and are not alternative pathways for normal DE students entering the CT and MRI specialisations. Enrolment pattern
For the Masters program, there will be different enrolment patterns within the generic course and within each specialisation. These will vary with level of student entrance, with session of entry and with chosen study pathway. Level of entrance will be Level 1 (zero-point credit entry), Level 2 (16-point credit entry) and Level 3 (32-point credit entry). Session of entry will be Session 1 or Session 2, and chosen study pathway will be the Research Option or the Coursework Option. The enrolment pattern for the Graduate Diploma exit program within the generic course and each specialisation will also vary with level of entrance and session of entry. Further, the listing of elective subjects for each enrolment pattern within a specialisation will often differ with session of entry. These will be presented with the enrolment patterns. Appendices 11 and 12 summarise in block diagram form, enrolment patterns for the generic course and each specialisation, for each entry level. Appendix 11 shows enrolment patterns for Session 1 entry into the course, and Appendix 12 for Session 2 entry. (These appendices also show entry criteria for each program).

Note, that there is no Level 2 Graduate Diploma (RII) program for Session 2 Intake. It is not possible for Session 2 Intake students in Level 2 Master of Medical Radiation Science (Radiographic Image Interpretation) program, to exit with a Graduate Diploma with the minimum required 48 subject points. It is a requirement to complete the key subjects MRS574 MRS575 and BMS511 to gain a Graduate Diploma in RII. However, these 16-point subjects do not commence in Session 2. Hence an extra 8-point subject would need to be taken in the commencing Session 2. This program is for onshore students only, and will allow, at Masters level, internal study and formal clinical training in CT, within Australia. The program is being introduced following high demand in certain countries, for Australian clinical training and CT Masters onshore study. International and Australian students doing the Master of Medical Radiation Science (Computed Tomography) by distance education (Specialisation 1, described earlier), will gain their clinical training while on the job and not through a formal clinical placement subject. Hence the two versions of the CT specialisation are tailored to different groups of applicants wanting to gain a Masters qualification in this field.

Articulation
The Graduate Diploma course is an exit point only course in the Masters degree. This will apply to the generic Master of Medical Radiation Science course and to all the course specialisations, but not to the Internal Tutorial mode version of the CT and MRI specialisations. Hence, the following are articulated sets:

Master of Medical Radiation Science (Computed Tomography) (incorporating the Graduate Diploma of Computed Tomography),
Master of Medical Radiation Science (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) (incorporating the Graduate Diploma of Magnetic Resonance Imaging),
Master of Medical Radiation Science (Radiographic Image Interpretation) (incorporating the Graduate Diploma of Radiographic Image Interpretation).
Admission requirements
To ensure that academic standards in this program are maintained at a high level, strict prerequisite requirements will be applied to each applicant.
There are three possible levels of entry into the Masters program: Level 1 (entry credit not required), Level 2 (16 point entry credit) and Level 3 (32 point entry credit). Applicants must generally be qualified radiographers or nuclear medicine technologists. However, in the generic course, radiation therapists are allowed entry at Level 1, and in the radiographic image interpretation specialisation, doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, chiropractics and podiatrists can enter at Level 1. Admission requirements vary for each entry level and also for each specialisation. Applicants must hold an appropriate two year diploma or a three or four year degree plus a minimum period of clinical work experience. For example in the generic course,
Level 1 entry:

two years medical imaging / nuclear medicine / radiation therapy diploma plus three years clinical experience
or
-
three year medical imaging / nuclear medicine / radiation therapy degree plus one to two years clinical experience
Level 2 entry:
-
three year medical imaging / nuclear medicine degree plus more than two years clinical experience
or
-
four year medical imaging / nuclear medicine degree with one year of clinical experience
Level 3 entry: (offered under very strict guidelines)
-
four year medical imaging / nuclear medicine degree with more than two years clinical experience and have an active CPD portfolio including seminar / conference presentation, posters and publications.

English proficiency
Applicants will be deemed to have sufficient English proficiency if they
- have undertaken an academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with an average score of 6.5, and with scores of 6 or higher in each of the individual skill areas within the last 12 months; or
- undertaken a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of 577 (or computerised TOEFL score of 233), with a Test for Written English Score (where reported) of at least 5.0 or an Internet-based score of 90 with a written score of 24 within the last 12 months; or
- undertaken other equivalent examinations, as determined by the Board of Graduate Studies; or
- completed a university degree where the language of assessment is in English;
The Presiding Officer of the Board of Graduate Studies may, in special circumstances, on behalf of the Board waive the above proficiency requirements after consulting the relevant Dean, Sub-Dean and nominated Supervisor.
NOTE: A Faculty may require a higher standard of proficiency than that specified above for programs deemed to be linguistically demanding.
