Master of Medical Ultrasound

What is this course about?

CSU's Master of Medical Ultrasound produces postgraduates with the skills and knowledge needed to undertake medical ultrasound at a high standard standard, while supporting them to develop academic skills necessary for ongoing professional development.

CSU is a major provider of medical imaging practitioners in Australia, preparing radiographers and nuclear medicine technologists through the School of Biomedical Sciences.

Students have the opportunity to develop their academic skills to enable them to undertake a lifetime of professional development in the field and become familiar with the research methods available in the area of medical ultrasound.

The Master degree comprises the Graduate Diploma subjects and an additional year of part-time study involving a dissertation relating to medical ultrasound.

Professional recognition

Students are eligible to become an Accredited Medical Sonographer (AMS) through the Australasian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR) at the completion of the eight Graduate Diploma subjects. The Master degree has also been accredited by the ASAR.

Credit

Credit will be given to students who have relevant postgraduate equivalent qualifications. This is usually assessed on an individual basis.

More information about credit and pathways.

Australian School of Medical Imaging

CSU is the preferred university for graduates of the Australian School of Medical Imaging (ASMI) to complete their sonography studies.

ASMI students who have successfully completed the Intensive Sonography Introductory Program (ISIP) will gain the equivalent credit of two 8 point subjects.

Graduates of ASMI's Graduate Program of Medical Ultrasound (GPMU) will gain the equivalent credit of five 8 point subjects.

Bridging and enabling programs are available through CSU to assist with the assumed knowledge for the course. For more information contact info.csu on 1800 334 733 or make an online enquiry

Residential school

There is a non-compulsory five-day residential school held on campus, usually during April of each year. Attendance at the residential school occurs during enrolment in PHY541 Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation. In addition, there is an optional two-day introductory residential school held in Wagga Wagga in February.

Academic expectations

For each 8 point subject at CSU, students should normally expect to spend between 140-160 hours engaged in the specified learning and assessment activities (such as attending lectures or residential schools, assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, assignments or examinations). The student workload for some subjects may vary from these norms as a result of approved course design.

Students will be assessed on the basis of completed assignments, examinations, workplace learning, or other methods as outlined in specific subject outlines.

Where applicable, students are responsible for travel and accommodation costs involved in workplace learning experiences, or attending residential schools (distance education students).

Expectations relating to academic, workplace learning, time and cost requirements for specific subjects are provided in the subject abstracts and in course materials.

**Note MRS540 commences in session 1 and is completed in session 3. This is acceptable with Student Administration. The subject is offered in two stand alone modules so students will not be disadvantaged by the session gap. It is not viable to offer MRS544 and PHY541 in two sessions each year and MRS547 should not be studied prior to PHY541. As such it is the optimumal enrolment pattern for those students wishing to commence study in July.

Admission requirements

To be admitted into the degree, applicants will normally:

  • hold a degree in Medical Imaging, Allied Health or equivalent*
  • have suitable access to a clinical ultrasound department for the duration of the course with appropriate supervision.

*Note: equivalence may be a degree qualification in a related field, or documented clinical experience.

English language proficiency

The University has minimum requirements for English language proficiency prior to entry to our courses. Some courses also have a requirement for a higher entry or exit level of English proficiency. More information on English language requirements.

Internet access

CSU places great emphasis on services to its students. It is a leader in the provision of online services and, in particular, the use of the internet in the support of teaching, administration and communications with students.

The online environment is so integrated into all aspects of student life and the learning experience at CSU that the University now assumes that all on campus and distance education students at CSU will have ongoing access to an internet connected computer capable of communicating with CSU online systems.

Students enrolled in Information Technology subjects (i.e. with an ITC subject code) may be required to have additional hardware and/or software that is deemed essential for the completion of the learning activities in that subject.
