Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary Curriculum)

CSU's course offers students who have enrolled (pre-201430) in the Bachelor of Education (K-12 Middle Schooling) or the Bachelor of Education (Health and PE) the opportunity to complete a second major high school specialisation or further studies to existing secondary teachers in a new teaching area not covered by initial qualifications.

Why study this course?

CSU’s Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary Curriculum) offers students who have enrolled pre-201430 in 3420KS, 3420KT, 3421KS in the Bachelor of Education (K-12 Middle Schooling) or 3408ED, 3409ED in the Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education) the opportunity to complete a second high school specialisation. The course offers candidates in the Bachelor of Education (K-12 Middle Schooling) who are currently studying the Graduate Certificate in Secondary Education, the opportunity to convert their second teaching area from a minor to major in the following areas.

  • English
  • Information Technology
  • History
  • Economics
  • Geography

The course also offers qualified secondary teachers who hold a three or four year undergraduate or postgraduate teaching degree from any Australian tertiary institution or international equivalent the opportunity to undertake further study in a content area not already contained within their present qualifications. It allows a concurrent program with the Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education). The course will offer students the option to have a second teaching area in science.

Depending on their background qualifications, on completion of the course graduates will have either:

  • a second specialist teaching area in either English, information technology, geography, history or economics, if enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (K-12 Middle Schooling)

or

  • a second specialist teaching area in science if enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education)
  • further studies in a new teaching area not originally covered in existing secondary teaching qualifications.

Note: This award does not provide an initial teacher education qualification. For graduate study, consider the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary).

Residential schools

Residential school requirements will be dependent on the subjects selected for study in this degree. Science subjects, for example, typically involve residential school requirements.

Graduation requirements

To graduate from CSU’s Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary Curriculum), students must satisfactorily complete 64 points.

Academic expectations

For each 8 point subject at CSU, students should normally expect to spend between 140-160 hours engaged in the specified learning and assessment activities (such as attending lectures or residential schools, assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, assignments or examinations). The student workload for some subjects may vary from these norms as a result of approved course design.

Students will be assessed on the basis of completed assignments, examinations, workplace learning, or other methods as outlined in specific subject outlines.

Where applicable, students are responsible for travel and accommodation costs involved in workplace learning experiences, or attending residential schools (distance education students).

Expectations relating to academic, workplace learning, time and cost requirements for specific subjects are provided in the subject abstracts and in course materials.

Overall Course Structure
To be awarded a Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary Curriculum) students will need to complete 64 subject points as specified.

Course Structure for Concurrent Cohorts
For the course structure of the concurrent programs:

  • BEd (Health & PE) - discipline subject choice will be prescribed in general alignment with the Key Learning Area of Science. Students enrolled in the BEd (Health & PE) program who decide to undertake a 5 year program will be required to complete their second year of study in this course and commence concurrent studies in the Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary Curriculum) from the commencement of Year 3.
  • BEd (K-12 Middle Schooling) - discipline subject choice will be prescribed in general alignment with Key Learning Areas. Students enrolled in the BEd (K-12 Middle Schooling) program who decide to undertake a 5 year program will be required to complete their third year of study in this course and commence concurrent studies in the fourth year of their undergraduate degree. They will be required to enrol in the Graduate Certificate in Secondary Education before applying for admission to the Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary Curriculum).

Course Structure for Independent Student Cohorts
For existing secondary teachers the course structure will be more flexible and a set enrolment pattern will not be initially required.
Candidates may choose the order in which they undertake subjects, depending upon their availability and the meeting of any prerequisites. Subject selection should be made in consultation with the Course Administrative Officers or Course Director. Eight groups of subjects will be drawn upon to create a personalised program of study for Secondary School Teachers.

These are:

1. Content subjects drawn from one of the 8 KLAs in Secondary Schools: Mathematics, Sciences, English, Human Society and its Environment (History, Geography, Business Studies, Economics, Study of Society and Culture, Legal Studies), Creative Arts (Art, Music, Dance, Drama), Technology and Applied Studies (Nutrition, IT, Graphic Design etc), PD/H/PE, LOTE. These subjects would be service taught from the respective Faculties of Arts, Business and Science within the University.

2. Curriculum methods subjects in any of the KLAs which relate to the content area undertaken from existing Curriculum subjects within the Faculty of Education. This includes - Visual Art, Society and Environment, English, Drama, Languages Other Than English (LOTE), Mathematics, Personal Development/Health/Physical Education (PD/H/PE), Science, Agriculture, Information Technology, Design and Technology, Technology and Applied Studies and Teacher Librarianship.

3. Educational studies subjects in Leadership, Literacy, TESOL, Inclusive Education, Information Communication Technology and Indigenous studies.

4. Professional Practice subjects including supervised practicum where a candidate's qualification is deemed to require additional currency in a professional/high school setting.

2. the below stipulated national accreditation requirements for a teaching area.

Secondary Teachers
For existing secondary teachers the Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary Curriculum) course structure will be more flexible and a set enrolment pattern will not be initially required. Candidates may select the order in which they undertake subjects, depending upon their availability and the meeting of any prerequisites.

Key Subjects
Because the subject selection for students in this degree is conditional on the area of teaching they are seeking teacher accreditation for, there are no subjects allocated to this degree. For this reason it is not possible to have key subjects.

Admission requirements

Admittance to this program is through three pathways:

  • guaranteed entry for Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education) students who in their second year of study apply for admission into the Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary Curriculum) to undertake a fifth year and graduate with dual awards. Students will not be eligible to enter concurrent studies in their third year of the undergraduate degree, until they have successfully completed the first two years of the Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education).
  • guaranteed entry for Bachelor of Education (K-12 Middle Schooling) students who in their third year of study apply for admission into the Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary Curriculum) to undertake a fifth year and graduate with dual awards. Students will not be eligible to enter concurrent studies until they have successfully completed three years of the Bachelor of Education (K-12 Middle Schooling).
  • qualified secondary teachers who hold a three or four year undergraduate or postgraduate teaching degree from any Australian tertiary institution or international equivalent. Consultation with the Course Director of Course Administrative Officer will be required prior to the selection of subjects.
