CSU's Master of TESOL produces competent graduates who are confident participants in, and active contributors to the increasingly diverse and digitising arena of English language teaching locally and internationally.
CSU's Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program creates opportunities for students to grow knowledge, competence, skills and strategies in English language teaching. Students will learn to foster critical professional leadership in English language teaching and develop skills for undertaking research in English language teaching. The program stimulates students’ understanding of and curiosity for the frontiers of English language teaching and encourages critical engagement in theory, policy and practice of English language teaching.
TESOL graduates will benefit from exciting career prospects and have opportunities to work locally and internationally. Graduates exercise leadership and are equipped with skills to design and manage professional development programs in TESOL. They are able to critically appraise TESOL research, theory, policy, and practice and engage in research and evidence informed TESOL practice. Our graduates contribute to the transformation of TESOL practice and policy in times of globalisation, digitisation and connected learning.
The Graduate Certificate articulates with the Master degree and all subjects completed in the Graduate Certificate are credited in the Master. Entry to the Master is dependent on meeting the specified admission criteria.
This course includes practical experience through workplace learning.
More information on workplace learning
The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) now offers student income support to students undertaking study in a number of professionally-oriented Master by coursework degrees.
Eligible students undertaking approved Master degrees will be able to access Youth Allowance, AUSTUDY, ABSTUDY or Pensioner Education Supplement. To be eligible for student income support through Youth Allowance and AUSTUDY, students will still need to be studying full-time and to satisfy all other Youth Allowance and AUSTUDY program requirements, including personal, parental or partner income tests. Students who have queries about masters courses and their income support entitlements should contact Centrelink on 13 2490 for further information.
To graduate from the Master degree, students must satisfactorily complete 68 points (nine subjects). To graduate from the Graduate Certificate, students must satisfactorily complete 36 points (five subjects).
For each 8 point subject at CSU, students should normally expect to spend between 140-160 hours engaged in the specified learning and assessment activities (such as attending lectures or residential schools, assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, assignments or examinations). The student workload for some subjects may vary from these norms as a result of approved course design.
Students will be assessed on the basis of completed assignments, examinations, workplace learning, or other methods as outlined in specific subject outlines.
Where applicable, students are responsible for travel and accommodation costs involved in workplace learning experiences, or attending residential schools (distance education students).
Expectations relating to academic, workplace learning, time and cost requirements for specific subjects are provided in the subject abstracts and in course materials.
