Bachelor of Business Studies

What is this course about?

CSU's Bachelor of Business Studies is our most flexible business degree. This generalist undergraduate degree offers a wide range of study opportunities and subject choices, allowing you to construct a program of study that best meets your interests and future work plans.

About the course

The course draws upon the extensive portfolio of subjects offered by the Faculty of Business, as well as subject offerings of other CSU Faculties. There are no specialisations in this program, however, you may choose to cluster subject choices around particular areas of interest or opt for a variety of study areas to better inform you about potential career choices. You are also encouraged to consider undertaking subjects that develop work ready skills.

Subjects offered within the Faculty of Business provide and optimum blend of theory and practice and aim to provide you with both soft skills such as communication, problem solving and ethical understanding to enable you to work with people, as well as the hard skills associated with particular areas of study, including accounting, computing, economics, finance, law,management, marketing, mathematics, operations and project management. Workplace learning subjects will offer strategic and international perspectives that will prepare you for employment in regional, national and international organisations.

International students may study the Bachelor of Business Studies through CSU regional campuses or the CSU Study Centres in Sydney or Melbourne. An intake in Session 3 is available for CSU Study Centres and distance education students. The Port Macquarie Campus offering is available to domestic students only.

As with all our courses, the Bachelor of Business Studies is designed and delivered with study flexibility in mind. You can choose between full-time and part-time study options to fit in with work and lifestyle commitments. You could choose to study just one subject in an academic session or, with approval, fast-track degree completion by undertaking four subjects per session if part-time.

China offering

The Bachelor of Business Studies is offered at four institutes in China:

  • Jilin University of Finance and Economics (formerly Changchun Taxation College)
  • Tianjin University of Commerce
  • Yangzhou University
  • Yunnan University of Finance and Economics (formerly Yunnan Finance and Trade Institute)

For more information about studying the Bachelor of Business Studies in China refer to the China section of the course structure.

Workplace learning

A number of Business workplace learning subjects are available that provide students with the opportunity to undertake a business placement in each of their three years of study (or equivalent). The expectations and outcomes associated with these subjects increase each year - for example, the length of placement will increase from 35 hours in Year 1 to 70 hours in Year 2 and 120 hours in Year 3. Placements may occur in practicum blocks or a dedicated regular time throughout the session. Students will be expected to make a meaningful contribution that will benefit the business and the student's key employability skills. The focus of each of the workplace learning subjects will be the nexus between theory (what the student will be learning in their studies) and practice (what actually happens in the workplace).

There may be ancillary costs associated with your workplace learning subject (for example, travel costs to reach the workplace). These costs may vary depending on the location of the work placement. Costs associated with completing workplace learning are the responsibility of the student.

Work placements are not available to international students due to current Australian Government visa regulations.

Academic expectations

For each 8 point subject at CSU, students should normally expect to spend between 140-160 hours engaged in the specified learning and assessment activities (such as attending lectures or residential schools, assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, assignments or examinations). The student workload for some subjects may vary from these norms as a result of approved course design.

Students will be assessed on the basis of completed assignments, examinations, workplace learning, or other methods as outlined in specific subject outlines.

Where applicable, students are responsible for travel and accommodation costs involved in workplace learning experiences, or attending residential schools (distance education students).

Expectations relating to academic, workplace learning, time and cost requirements for specific subjects are provided in the subject abstracts and in course materials.

Career opportunities

This course is a flexible, generalist undergraduate degree. There is a wide range of opportunities available to graduates across all sectors of the economy from not-for-profit and public sector to global enterprises. The option is available to design a degree which draws subjects from across the discipline areas of the Faculty of Business, as well as subjects from other Faculties, which permits tailoring of subjects to meet a variety of career aspirations.

Credit/ pathways

Students who have studied and successfully completed relevant subjects at other universities or educational institutions may apply for credit for those subjects when applying to CSU courses. Credit will be granted for subjects which are equivalent in content and standard, at the discretion of the Course Director.

More information about credit and pathways.

It is recommended, however, that students complete level one subjects before completing level two subjects and level two subjects before completing level three subjects.

Admission requirements

Subject to the availability of places, the University will admit any applicant it believes can undertake the proposed courses with reasonable prospect of success. In determining an applicant's prospect for success, the University will consider previous studies and/or other attainments and experience.

For both distance education and internal students these courses are competitive. For internal students there are no special admission requirements specific to these courses.

Admission is according to the standard CSU criteria for undergraduate courses. International applicants must also meet the CSU admission requirements in terms of English language requirements.

To be admitted into the course, prospective students need to indicate their likelihood of success through:

  1. previous studies, and
  2. other attainments and experience.

Previous studies

Previous studies include:

  • the NSW Higher School Certificate or interstate /overseas equivalent;
  • the International Baccalaureate Diploma;
  • a completed or part completed course of a university, college of advanced education or other accredited tertiary institution;
  • a completed or part completed course of a TAFE college or other accredited post-secondary institution (including TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate);
  • an approved Foundation Studies program certificate;
  • completion of undergraduate subjects as an Associate Student with the University or through another University, or Open Universities Australia.

NSW and interstate school leavers are normally selected on the basis of their Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) or interstate equivalent. You may also be admitted on the basis of a strong performance in subjects relevant to your course preferences.

Currently no secondary school subjects are prerequisites for admission to particular CSU courses however some courses assume a certain level of knowledge. This will be specified in the course information if applicable.

English language proficiency

The University has minimum requirements for English language proficiency prior to entry to our courses. Some courses also have a requirement for a higher entry or exit level of English proficiency. More information on English language requirements.

Attainment and experience

You may also be admitted to a course based on other attainments and experience. These may include:

  • voluntary or paid work experience;
  • performance in tests and examinations conducted by professional recognised bodies;
  • participation in continuing education programs and/or staff development programs conducted by adult education agencies, consultancies, professional bodies or employers;
  • completion of the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT).

Internet access

CSU places great emphasis on services to its students. It is a leader in the provision of online services and, in particular, the use of the internet in the support of teaching, administration and communications with students.

The online environment is so integrated into all aspects of student life and the learning experience at CSU that the University now assumes that all on campus and distance education students at CSU will have ongoing access to an internet connected computer capable of communicating with CSU online systems.

Students enrolled in Information Technology subjects (i.e. with an ITC subject code) may be required to have additional hardware and/or software that is deemed essential for the completion of the learning activities in that subject.
