The theoretical material in the program, taught on CSU's Ontario Campus in modern lecture theatres, tutorial rooms and computer laboratories, is complemented with extensive practical work, case studies, seminars, and report writing. The practical component is completed at Mohawk College and McMaster University, utilising their modern industry standard laboratories.
Students must complete a six-week compulsory professional placement component. The placement can be completed in two three-week blocks, preferably in the last 20 months of the course. Placement locations can range from private companies to public research institutes and utilities. The location and project concerned must be approved by the Program Coordinator prior to commencement of the placement. There is also the opportunity to undertake practical experience overseas. Students who can prove at least six to eight months of previous employment in an approved discipline are exempt from this component.
Distance education students will be required to attend on campus practical sessions for some courses. These sessions provide intensive teaching on the practical aspects of the course. Generally, the sessions are up to eight days' duration per course, and will be held at Mohawk College and McMaster University.
