Diploma of General Studies

What is this course about?

CSU's Diploma of General Studies is a pathway program that provides guaranteed entry to many CSU courses, providing a wide range of opportunities and choices to graduates.

This course is a pathway program for students who wish to study at CSU but who do not meet the entry criteria or require further preparation.

The course is offered in partnership with selected TAFE Institutes and, in 2013, will be offered from the following locations:

  • CSU Albury- Wodonga - Wodonga Institute of TAFE
  • CSU Bathurst - Western Institute of TAFE
  • CSU Dubbo – Western Institute of TAFE (by distance education)
  • CSU Wagga Wagga - Riverina Institute of TAFE

The Diploma of General Studies is a combination of eight subjects studied over two 17-week sessions. The equivalent of four subjects are drawn from TAFE Certificate IV in Further Education or Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC) and four from CSU's bachelor level subjects. The subjects will provide a solid preparation for your University studies.

For the first time, the Diploma of General Studies will also be offered via distance education in 2013. Find out more about the new distance education option.

Where it will take you

On successful completion of the program, students will attain:

  • a Diploma of General Studies from CSU
  • Certificate IV in Further Education or Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC) from TAFE
  • guaranteed entry into non-competitive CSU degrees
  • in some cases, credit for up to four CSU subjects in the bachelor degree

What our students say

Noma Ndlovu"The CSU Pathway Program was fun and really rewarding. It helped me decide what I wanted to do and prepared me for my degree so I was confident when I started. I am almost finished my degree and it’s going really well. The Pathway Program gave me the opportunity to be here and doing something I love"

Academic expectations

For each 8 point subject at CSU, students should normally expect to spend between 140-160 hours engaged in the specified learning and assessment activities (such as attending lectures or residential schools, assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, assignments or examinations). The student workload for some subjects may vary from these norms as a result of approved course design.

Students will be assessed on the basis of completed assignments, examinations, workplace learning, or other methods as outlined in specific subject outlines.

Where applicable, students are responsible for travel and accommodation costs involved in workplace learning experiences, or attending residential schools (distance education students).

Expectations relating to academic, workplace learning, time and cost requirements for specific subjects are provided in the subject outlines and in course materials.

Guaranteed entry

Successful completion of the Diploma of General Studies provides guaranteed entry into many non-competitive CSU degrees. In some cases, credit for up to four CSU subjects in the bachelor degree will be granted.

The following links indicate the courses available with guaranteed entry, as well as the credits granted.
