Alumni: an association for graduates, staff and lecturers from Charles Sturt University.
Bachelor: a degree awarded to a student who has completed studies in
an undergraduate course.
Core subjects: compulsory subjects that make
up the structure of a course.
Course: an entire program of study made
up of a set number of subjects.
Course Coordinator: member of the academic
staff of a faculty responsible for administrative matters relating to students
enrolled in a course.
Elective: an optional subject within a course.
Faculty:
a department within the University devoted to a particular area of study.
Higher Degree by Coursework:
at the master level this involves the completion of a dissertation embodying
the results of an investigation or similar study,
comprising less than two thirds of the program. The balance of the program
may be by coursework or other independent study approved by the Coordinator.
Higher Degree by Research:
at the master and doctoral level this is based primarily (i.e. two thirds or
more) on a thesis arising from original
and significant research that results in a distinct contribution to knowledge
of the subject. This may be in the form of original investigation, review,
criticism or design. The thesis must demonstrate that the candidate’s work
is excellent both in theory and technique and forms the principal basis for
assessment.
Major: a component of an undergraduate course comprising
an approved sequence of subjects totalling 64 subject points or more.
Master degree:
a postgraduate course.
Minor: a sequence of approved subjects totalling
32 to 64 subject points.
Postgraduate: person who has a degree from
a university and is studying for a more advanced qualification, e.g. an award
at graduate certificate, graduate
diploma, master or doctoral level.
Prerequisites: These are specific
Year 12 subjects which you must have completed before you are allowed to enrol
in some university courses. You should
be aware of any prerequisites you require (which are listed beside each course),
and make sure you choose subjects you may need in Years 11 and 12.
Recommended knowledge:
These are Year 12 subjects the university suggests will assist you in your
chosen university course.
Restricted elective: a unit of academic study
outside the core subjects, but chosen from a list related to a specialisation.
Semester:
one of two divisions of the academic year, also known as a session.
Session:
a period of time during which classes are held.
Subject: a unit of academic
study within your degree program.
Subject points: a value assigned to
a subject to reflect the relative weighting of the subject. At CSU, a standard
one session subject is assigned
eight subject points.
Trimester: one of three divisions of the academic
year, also known as a session.
Tutorial: a period of teaching given
to a small group of students, involving discussion and participation.
UAI (Universities Admission Index):
Admission to most of CSU’s courses
depends on your performance in the HSC or VCE. Your UAI (or equivalent score)
assists in ranking applicants for university selection. For some courses, other
selection criteria such as a portfolio, interview, audition or questionnaire
may be taken into account in conjunction with your UAI.
Undergraduate:
a person studying at a university for a first degree, eg, an award at associate
diploma, diploma, associate degree, university certificate, bachelor degree
or bachelor (honours) degree level.
