Professional recognition

It is the responsibility of the NSWIT is to assure the profession and the community of the quality of teacher education programs. The Institute does this through the approval of programs offered by providers of initial teacher education ensuring that the programs meet the requirements of the Professional Teaching Standards at the Graduate Teacher level. Graduates of approved programs are eligible for provisional accreditation to teach in NSW schools.

The NSWIT Policy for Approval of Initial Teacher Education Programs was approved by the Minister for Education and Training, in July 2006, and guiding documentation relating to aspects of the Graduate Teacher Standards is currently being developed.

The Advisory process that has been undertaken has provided assurance that the proposed course is in compliance with the Subject Content Requirements for primary teacher accreditation and the specific requirements of the NSWIT accreditation process in relation to:

  • Professional experience
  • Special education
  • Literacy education
  • Information and communication technologies
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education
  • Non-English Speaking Background (NESB) education
  • Challenging behaviours / classroom management.

This course has received final accreditation approval by the New South Wales Institute of Teachers.
