  1. a core of twelve Education subjects; and,
  2. twelve discipline subjects (credited as entry level credit based upon initial undergraduate qualification).

The core of twelve Education subjects will be organised as follows:

  1. Education Studies- 7 subjects;
  2. Professional Experience - 2 subjects;
  3. Curriculum Studies - 2 subjects; and,

NOTES

Curriculum Studies subjects: Students are enrolled in different curriculum subjects so to ensure they all have access to all required content areas, the two curriculum studies subjects in each discipline are designed around an agreed upon structure to address specific areas, such a classroom management , assessment & reporting, planning, language etc . Consequently, the process of verifying that all mandatory areas of the NSWIT Standards Framework are addressed is readily achievable.

Students will be required to meet the accreditation regulations of the jurisdiction in which they seek employment. In NSW, the minimum required by employers for a teaching area of specialisation in any single discipline is three years of study (6 subjects). It is compulsory for all pre-service secondary teacher education students to complete the required minimum in at least one teaching specialisation area to qualify for employment. For double degree students, planning for this minimum requirement should be done at the beginning of the course. Potential Graduate Entry students will have this precondition as one of the eligibility requirements on application.

Although not compulsory for all students, many seek to advance their employability by including a second area of teaching specialisation as part of their program. The mandatory requirement for adding a second area of teaching specialisation varies and students should confirm these details by contacting the relevant teacher registration body in each state. In NSW the New South Wales Institute of Teachers is the recognised accrediting institute for both government and non-government schools. Course Coordinators for the respective degree program will inform students of minimim registration requirements when negotiating a second area of specialisation to enable them to meet registration requirements.

The subjects EEP441 Reconceptualising Secondary Education, EED442 Teaching For Learning, EEL441 Literacies For Learning, EEP443 Aboriginal Perspectives for Secondary Education, EPT441 Professional Experience 1 and EPT442 Professional Experience 2 are to be offered in BOTH Autumn and Spring sessions in distance education mode to provide flexible pathways through the program.

The key subjects to apply to this course from 201030 are:

EEP441 Reconceptualising Secondary Education
EED441 Constructions of Adolescence and their Educational Implications
