CSU's Bachelor of Adult and Vocational Education aims to meet the professional needs of students with vocational qualifications who want to be able to teach in their discipline area in an adult learning environment or in their particular vocational setting.

Why study this course?

CSU’s Bachelor of Adult and Vocational Education is designed for people wishing to become trainers, learning facilitators or consultants in the adult and vocational education sectors. Students have the opportunity to study the generic stream or can choose from three specilisations. Students can choose to exit with the Associate Degree in Adult and Vocational Education. This course is offered by distance education, providing students with the flexibility to study at a time and place that suit their lifestyle, with access to a wide range of learning materials, support and communication tools online.

This course allows students to enhance their skills in teaching and learning preparing them with skills in the assessment of student learning and the evaluation of training programs. Students will develop an understanding of the broad socio-economic and political context in which adult and vocational education and training is located. They will gain awareness of social justice and equity policies and their application in a range of teaching and learning environments including Indigenous, refugee and migrant education and training strategies. Students will develop knowledge about adolescents and adults, and learning and skills in and knowledge of training in workplace environments.

Our graduates have expertise in communication in face-to-face and digital teaching and learning environments and the capacity to design and manage vocational education and training programs. They have an awareness of the value of open and lifelong learning and a predisposition to reflect upon and to accept professional responsibility for their own continuing education. Graduates have the ability to analyse and think critically and constructively about current developments in adult and vocational education and have strong training and research skills that enhance professional and workplace practice.

Associate Degree in Adult and Vocational Education

CSU's Associate Degree in Adult and Vocational Education is an entry level course designed to enable people with technical or vocational qualifications and experience to teach in a range of settings. This course meets the professional needs of students with vocational qualifications who want to teach in their discipline area in an adult learning environment or in their particular vocational setting. It is designed for people wishing to become trainers, learning facilitators or consultants in the adult and vocational education sectors.

Graduation requirements

Students must successfully complete nine core subjects and seven elective subjects to graduate with the Bachelor of Adult and Vocational Education. Students may choose to exit after successfully completing eight core subjects with the Associate Degree in Adult and Vocational Education.

Career opportunities

CSU's Bachelor of Adult and Vocational Education and Associate Degree in Adult and Vocational Education equip graduates with the knowledge and skills to enhance teaching in their technical or vocational area. Graduates develop expertise to teach at TAFE, non-TAFE providers of adult and vocational education and in industry as teachers, trainers, lecturers, learning facilitators or vocational education consultants.

Credit

A standard package of credit on entry of 64 points (VET08C) is awarded for students who hold a recognised vocational / professional qualification such as a trade certificate (Certificate III), advanced certificate (Certificate IV), associate diploma, diploma or the appropriate tertiary qualification and a minimum of three years' relevant industrial experience, or possess other qualifications deemed to be equivalent by the Faculty.

The BSZ4018 Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training, the TAA40104 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and/or TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment do not count as vocational qualifications for entry purposes.

Credit on entry of 24 points (VET03C) is awarded for students who hold the TAA40104 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment - this credit is contingent upon successful completion of the subject EEB312 Reflective Practices and Lifelong Learning.

This credit exempts completion of the subjects EPT327 Effective Teaching in VET, EEE303 Training Design and Assessment, and EPT322 Training in Workplaces.

ASSOCIATE DEGREE IN ADULT AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION

All students receive a standard entry credit level package of 64 subject points based on the entry criteria: a recognised vocational/professional qualification such as a trade certificate (Certificate III), advanced certificate (Certificate IV), associate diploma, diploma or the appropriate tertiary qualification and a minimum of three years relevant industrial experience or possess other qualifications deemed to be equivalent by the Faculty. This entry credit is represented as VET08C Entry Level Vocational Credit. The duration of the course in equivalent full time years is 1.0.

For students who have completed the TAA 40104 or TAE 40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment an additional standard credit package will be issued. This is represented as VET03C - Certificate IV TAA 40104 /TAE 40110 Credit - 24 subject points and will appear as a Forward Credit (FCR) conditional upon the successful completion of EEB312 Reflective Practice and Lifelong Learning. This VET03C credit will exempt students from the following subjects: EEE303 Training Design & Assessment; EPT322 Training in Workplaces and EPT327 Effective Teaching in VET. Actual course duration with additional credit package (FTE): 0.625

NOTE: Students must have completed the TAA 40104 or TAE 40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and provided a copy of their Certificate and transcript prior to enrolling in EEB312.

Students with qualifications and experience beyond the minimum level (a recognised technical/vocational qualification such as a trade certificate (Certificate III), advanced certificate (Certificate IV), associate diploma, diploma or the appropriate tertiary qualification or equivalent, and a minimum of three years' relevant industrial experience) may be eligible for credit in some subjects. Note: A BSZ98 Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment or a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAA 40104 or TAE 40110) does not count as a vocational qualification for entry purposes.

Workplace learning

There is a total of 200 hours of practicum across the program. These practicum hours include time for preparation of lesson plans and resources as well as evaluation and the delivery of training. Students are responsible for organising appropriate sites in which to undertake their practicum and need to meet any site-related requirements and associated costs.

The practicum-related subjects are:

EPT320 High Level Facilitation Skills for Post Compulsory Education
EPT322 Training in Workplaces
EPT327 Effective Teaching in VET

Additional Admission requirements

Applicants must have a recognised vocational / professional qualification such as a trade certificate (Certificate III), advanced certificate (Certificate IV), associate diploma, diploma or the appropriate tertiary qualification and a minimum of three years' relevant industrial experience, or possess other qualifications deemed to be equivalent by the Faculty.

Admission requirements

To be admitted into the course, prospective students need to indicate their likelihood of success through:

previous studies, and
other attainments and experience.

Previous studies

Previous studies include:

the NSW Higher School Certificate or interstate /overseas equivalent;
the International Baccalaureate Diploma;
a completed or part completed course of a university, college of advanced education or other accredited tertiary institution;
a completed or part completed course of a TAFE college or other accredited post-secondary institution (including TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate);
an approved Foundation Studies program certificate;
completion of undergraduate subjects as an Associate Student with the University or through another University, or Open Universities Australia.

NSW and interstate school leavers are normally selected on the basis of their Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) or interstate equivalent. You may also be admitted on the basis of a strong performance in subjects relevant to your course preferences.

Currently no secondary school subjects are prerequisites for admission to particular CSU courses however some courses assume a certain level of knowledge. This will be specified in the course information if applicable.

English language proficiency

The University has minimum requirements for English language proficiency prior to entry to our courses. Some courses also have a requirement for a higher entry or exit level of English proficiency. More information on English language requirements.

Attainment and experience

You may also be admitted to a course based on other attainments and experience. These may include:

voluntary or paid work experience;
performance in tests and examinations conducted by professional recognised bodies;
participation in continuing education programs and/or staff development programs conducted by adult education agencies, consultancies, professional bodies or employers;
completion of the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT).

Internet access

The online environment is so integrated into all aspects of student life and the learning experience at CSU that the University now assumes that all on campus and distance education students at CSU will have ongoing access to an internet connected computer capable of communicating with CSU online systems.

Students enrolled in Information Technology subjects (i.e. with an ITC subject code) may be required to have additional hardware and/or software that is deemed essential for the completion of the learning activities in that subject.
