Creative Industries Graduate
“I decided in Year 12 that I wanted to work within the world of film and TV. However, I didn’t know anyone who did and had no idea how to go about getting my foot in the door of such a competitive industry. I spoke with my careers adviser and together we found a degree at Charles Sturt University (CSU) that suited me.
"I had a really strong passion for the industry but knew from the credits in a film that there were a lot of areas for me to explore. The course at CSU was a very broad course encompassing all areas of design and management within stage and screen. This course gave me the opportunity to find out what areas I liked and also importantly cross off the areas I didn’t.
"In my third year, I was lucky enough to gain an internship at Home and Away. I felt confident going into that opportunity with the knowledge I’d gained from CSU. When I graduated a few months later, I was offered a full-time position within the costume department of the show, where my daily duties on set included costume maintenance, dressing the cast, and working with other departments to make the day run smoothly. I spent eight months there before leaving to begin my freelancing career.
"I have worked all over Australia, often moving to a different state once or twice each year. I have had the chance to work on American films, BBC dramas, HBO sci-fi programs, Australian historical pieces, kids TV, commercials and much more. I’ve been working full-time for the four years since leaving CSU and although this industry will always remain a challenge, the job is rewarding.
"Had I not had the background I got at CSU, I don’t feel I would have received the opportunities or gained the confidence to put myself out there for the amazing career I’ve had so far."
