"I wanted to study art history while living in my home state of Tasmania and Charles Sturt University (CSU) was able to provide not only the art history subjects I wanted, but also the convenience of studying online. I lived with my husband in various parts of Tasmania and I had a variety of jobs while studying. Working was always to “pay the bills” while I moved towards gaining more qualifications in art history.
"The advantages of studying online for me were portability and flexibility. In the years I was studying I had three job changes, moved house three times, and had a child! Studying online meant that I could study at my own pace. And of course, it meant that I could be a student and a parent. This is something that is very important to me. I am a scholar at heart, and to be able to follow my passions while raising a family, without sacrificing one or the other, was something I wanted to prove to myself I could achieve, and by doing so be a role model for my children. I was always determined that being a parent wouldn't stop me from studying. This was a driving motivation for me. I believe that you can do almost anything if you are willing to work hard for it, and for me that meant being a scholar and being a mum were not mutually exclusive. I didn't want to wait until I had finished university before I had kids, nor did I want to put my academic career on hold while I had young children.
"My subject coordinators were always very friendly and helpful, and provided excellent feedback on my assignments and forum participation. I’d like to make a special mention of Dr Sam Bowker who supervised my art history Honours dissertation, and has been a perpetual font of information and encouragement. I am certain that his passion for art history is an inspiration to many students.
"As a teenager and young adult I worked in hospitality and retail and really had nothing on my resume to recommend me to the arts sector. Since finishing my Honours degree I have been offered work as a casual academic. This has given me valuable work experience in an academic position.
"In 2014 I was writing my Honours dissertation. I was also pregnant and gave birth half way through the academic year. I went on to finish my dissertation, graduate with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), and won a University Medal! 2014 was a good year and my most memorable CSU experience!
"CSU offers an excellent standard of education, a wide range of courses, knowledgeable and helpful staff, and a variety of study options. Thanks to CSU’s online options, I have been able to simultaneously raise a family and pursue my passion for art history without moving interstate. I am hoping to begin a PhD in art history at CSU in the next six to twelve months."
