International Experience Program: Service Learning in the Himalayas - India

Proposed 2013 program

This three-week program, based in the state of Uttarakhand in northern India, introduces students to the culture and way of life in the scenic hill country in and around the Hindu pilgrimage centre of Rishikesh, in the foothills of the Himalayas. Through program provider India Study Abroad Centre (ISAC) students will engage with the local culture through involvement in the work of community service groups in both the city and countryside. Participants devise and develop an action plan/project designed to contribute to the community.

This program is partially funded by the Australian Government’s Study Overseas Short-term Mobility Program through the Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research and Tertiary Education. CSU recognises the support of the Australian Government in providing targeted funds which have subsidised the cost of this program to students. 

When: 14 November - 9 December, 2013 (exact dates TBC)

Eligibility: Bachelor of Communication (Journalism) students.  Where vacancies exist students from other courses may be considered. Students must negotiate credit on an individual basis.

Credit: (1st yr students) Non-specific elective, (2nd yr students) Credit towards JRN316 Journalism Speciality 

Available program places: 14

NB. This program will require 10 students to proceed.

Cost: approx $1800*

*The $500 Vice Chancellor Travel Grant and DIICSRTE funding is not awarded directly to students but has already been included in program costings.

Costs should include: Program fee, international flights, accommodation, visa, travel insurance, most meals (vegetarian), some local transport, 24 hour emergency support, local mobile phone sim card and day trip to Taj Mahal.

Costs do not include: CSU subject fees, additional meals, sightseeing and transport expenses.

Please note all CSU Global Programs are group ticketed. Your program will depart from Sydney and return to Sydney on the dates listed.

  • $500 non-refundable deposit due: 30 August, 2013
  • Final and full payment due: 6 September, 2013
    (You MUST have obtained your passport prior to this date - with a minimum of 6mth validity from the program's return date)

The Service Learning in the Himalayas Program is an opportunity to participate in and witness social change first-hand! Visit and work with NGOs and social organizations in rural India. 70% of India lives in its villages and this program is your chance to understand the development challenges faced by India.

Observe, understand and contribute to social change in Rural India. Learn about how many NGOs and government organizations are transforming Rural India. Witness the development challenges faced by the world’s 2nd largest democracy. All this and more in the shortest possible time!

Proposed program activities

  • Visit local NGOs and social organizations to study development models first-hand.
  • Visit governmental organizations to understand the intricacies of governmental policy making and developmental schemes.
  • Learn about developmental strategies, initiatives and models that are impacting issues faced by the world today including education, healthcare, child protection, women's empowerment, HIV/AIDS.
  • Get placed in organizations where you can contribute your skills, effort and time to assist in the developmental tasks of the organizations through a small project.
