Topic Area: Film Industry Management & Marketing – India

Proposed 2013 program - A one of a kind program that is based in the heart of India’s film industry popularly known as “Bollywood”. 

This brand new program is an exciting opportunity for Business students to look at marketing and management in the context of the Indian film and television industry. The program emphasizes the inner workings and logistics of the film industry in Mumbai and incorporates meetings with film professionals, visits to film shoots, post production studios and hands on student project.

NB: this program will require 10 students to proceed.

Program Cost: Approx. $3300* - based on 2012 program fees (exact costs TBC)

*The $500 Vice Chancellor Travel Grant is not awarded directly to students but has already been included in program costings.

Costs should include: Program fee, international flights, accommodation, visa, insurance, meals.

Costs do not include CSU subject fees.

Please note all CSU Global Programs are group ticketed. Your program will depart from Sydney and return to Sydney on the dates listed.

Eligibility: You must be an enrolled undergraduate Business degree student (either Internal or Distance mode) at CSU in 2012.

Credit:  Students who successfully completes this International Experience Program will be eligible for credit in one of the subjects in Banking/Finance or International Business or in another appropriate area. On completion each student must submit a detailed report on the program, its coverage, and how it benefited you in learning process in order to claim subject credit. (Please contact your Course Coordinator for credit approval)

Indicative program outline

Week 1 :  Malavli
1. Overview of the Indian film industry
2. 3 film screenings and meetings with Industry marketing professionals about the marketing strategies employed for these films and reasons for success/failure
3. Meetings with Public Relations Agents, Media Professionals, Publicity Designers and Producers
4. Visit to a local theatre. A feel of rural exhibition of films.
5. Reflection and workshop

Week 2 : Mumbai
1. Field visits to film city, ND studios and 2 television shoots
2. Overview of film production. Logistics, planning and tools used to make the process efficient
3. Meeting with producers about raising money and profitability. The star system and future of Indian film industry
4. Corporatisation of the film industry. Effects on standalone producers and the conventional production system
5. Case study of US studios in India.
6. Reflection and workshop

Week 3 : Mumbai
1. Film Distribution – an overview of the top down system. Inefficiencies and irregularities of the system.
2. Multiplexes and corporatisation of the distribution system
3. Visit to a corporate production and distribution house. One on one with executives.
4. Visit to various exhibition centers in Mumbai. The single screens and the multiplexes
5. Reflection and summary of program
