Topic Area: Microfinance - extended application closing date

This is an exciting opportunity for Business students to Intern with microfinance institutions based in the vibrant city of Mumbai and surrounding rural areas. This internship program and its placement provide you with an opportunity to understand the inner workings of such institutions with a focus on achieving financial inclusion for the otherwise 'non-bankable' urban poor in India. In addition the program provides you with an in-depth understanding of the concept of Microfinance, livelihood issues and the dynamics of urban poverty.

When: 22 June - 7 July, 2013 (two weeks)

Eligibility: You must be an enrolled undergraduate Business degree student (either Internal or Distance mode) at CSU in 2013.

Credit: Students who successfully complete this International Experience Program, additional assessment items and pay the subject fee will be eligible to apply for credit in MGT363.

Number of places available: 12

NB. This program will require 10 students to proceed.

*The $500 Vice Chancellor Travel Grant (for eligible students) is not awarded directly to students but has already been included in program costings. Indian nationals who participate in this program will not be eligible to receive the Vice Chancellor Travel Grant, therefore raising their program cost to $2750.

Costs should include: Program fee, international flights, in-country transfers, accommodation, insurance, meals, visas (for those travelling on Australian passports).

Costs do not include CSU subject fees

Please note all CSU Global Programs are group ticketed.  Your program will depart from Sydney and return to Sydney on the dates listed.

  • Passport submission for visa processing:12 April, 2013
  • $1000 non-refundable deposit payment date: 12 April, 2013
  • $1250 final and full payment date: 26th April, 2013

Indicative program outline:

This is an exciting opportunity for Business students to Intern with microfinance institutions based in the vibrant city of Mumbai. This internship program and its placement provide you with an opportunity to understand the inner workings of such institutions with a focus on achieving financial inclusion for the otherwise “non-bankable” urban poor in India. In addition the program provides you with an in-depth understanding of the concept of Microfinance, livelihood issues and the dynamics of urban poverty.

During the program, students will:

  • Participate in Group meetings (client meetings) towards gaining better understanding of issues in urban poverty and access to credit. Meetings with microfinance ground level staff and management.
  • Gain an understanding of microfinance principles, process and methodology
  • Work on the implementation of microfinance as a tool to alleviate urban poverty
  • Conduct Market research (microfinance requirements), product designing
  • Produce case documentation (written, audio and video documentation)
  • Exlplore IT systems (including website improvement)
  • Assist in establishing MIS, HR and capacity building (for ground level staff and new staff)
  • Interact with bankers working in Microfinance
