International Experience Program: Solomon Islands

Faculty of Education

Solomon Island studentsProfessional Practicum Placement - 2013 program

Students will spend around 3 weeks living in a rural village and teaching in local village school(s) participating in a fully credited professional experience (practicum) placement. The projected location is Munda in the Western Province, where there will be opportunities for third year students from the Bachelor of Education (K-12 Middle Schooling), Bachelor of Education (HPE) and Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) courses to undertake a professional experience placement.

Students will be accompanied by a member of academic staff who will provide teaching support as well as guidance in their professional placement. Prior to departure, all successful applicants will be expected to attend workshops on cultural sensitivity to explore the nature of the context in which they will be working. Typically students will be provided with lessons in Pidgin English to support interactions with community members. The community in Munda offers beautiful environment and plenty of opportunities to explore the natural wonders of a tropical island in their free time. The village has internet access so students can maintain contact with family and friends for support. However, students who are chosen to participate will have to demonstrate a capacity to get on with others in 'close' environments, so there will be a screening process to select the best candidates for the placement.
