School of Biomedical Sciences - Proposed 2013 program
This program places students in various world-renowned biomedical research centres and institutions in four different countries - United Kingdom, France, Germany and Switzerland.
It offers great learning opportunities for biomedical sciences, food & nutrition, pharmacy, medical science and public health students who are interested in International health.
Program Dates: June - July, 2013 (Three weeks) exact dates to be confirmed
Number of Places: 30 students
Cost: Approx. AUD$4900.00* - based on 2012 program fees (exact costs TBC)
*The $500 Vice Chancellor Travel Grant is not awarded directly to students but has already been included in program costings.
Cost Includes: Program fee; international flights; most of the accommodation at sites; most of the transport costs at site, visa (for those travelling on Australian passports) & insurance.
Costs do not include CSU subject fees, some accommodation, meals and in-country transport costs
Note: All CSU Global programs are group ticketed. Your program will depart from Sydney and return to Sydney on the dates listed. Home-stay families are citizens of Seoul and can speak English.
Eligibility: Bachelor of Complementary Medicine, Bachelor of Forensic Biotechnology, Bachelor of Health Science (Food & Nutrition), Bachelor of Medical Science, Bachelor of Medical Science /Bachelor of Forensic Biotechnology
Bachelor of Nutrition & Dietetics and Bachelor of Pharmacy students
Credit Arrangements: You can enrol in the subject SCI301 - International Practical Experience (8 points), if you want this trip to count towards the elective in the current course structure for;
- Bachelor of Complementary Medicine
- Bachelor of Health Science (Food & Nutrition)
- Bachelor of Pharmacy
- Bachelor of Medical Science
Students will be asked to write up a report on the visit and that will be able to be used against the clinical experience requirement.

Program Outline:
The overall aims the Europe program are:
- Exposure to world renowned Biomedical research centres and instituitions.
- Exposure to cutting edge, world class research and teaching in areas of Biomedical sciences like biotechnology, microbiology, nutrition and pharmaceutical sciences.
- Broaden student's awareness of international health issues.
- Expose students to world-class international health research.
- Give students an understanding of the international manufacturing companies.
- Provide students with a broader understanding of careers in health science.
- Expose students to non-English speaking European cultures.
- Provide students with a personal development opportunity within a supportive learning environment.
- Inspire students to seek an international perspective & develop networks between CSU and international students.
- Enhance multi-cultural communication skills to compete effectively in a global market.
What do I do on the program? You will be visiting many sites and getting an overview and will be exposed to public health matters, hospitals, pharmaceutical manufacturing, biotechnology, microbiology, regulatory affairs, pharmacy practice, nutrition & neutraceuticals, premier scientific laboratories and scientists
Where is the program located? The program is spread across locations in London, Paris, Munich & various locations in Switzerland that include Geneva, Lausanne, Bern & Zurich.
All these are located in settings and have natural and historic sites, restaurants and other popular tourist attractions. Most of these areas are conveniently located and well connected with Road, Train & Air, if you wish to do extra travel.
No prior experience or other training required. Participants must be over 18 years of age easygoing and flexible. Participants must be open minded, willing to take initiative to contribute and learn from their environment and be respectful to their surroundings. Students need to respect the local traditions and norms of the community they stay with.
Accommodation: On sharing twin basis in hostels, guest houses or hotels (as available at the time of booking).
Meals: Meals will at on your cost.
Transport: Most of the transport cost is covered in the cost. However there will be times transport costs will be at your own expense.
Entry fees: Entry fees to sites and other related activities which are tourist related will be at your own expense.
Who guides you in the different health sites? In most sessions and day-trips there will be a site expert to guide you through the program.
What about my safety, communication and welfare? The countries in Europe that you are travelling to are considered low risk countries and all sites are deemed as safe and low risk areas with adequate avenues for communication, safety and welfare.
What can I do on weekends or free times? There are a number of well known and interesting tourist attractions in the cities you are visiting.

There are many possibilities as fortunately you are visiting Europe in summer which is pleasant weather (compared to Australian summers).
Are there any scholarships for the trip? Students who are recieving academic credit for participating in this program should be eligible for a $500 travel grant, however this grant is not awarded directly to students but deducted from the program fee.
Who is leading the program? Academics from the School of Biomedical Sciences who have experience in Europe and speak 1 or more languages will be leading the program.
