Topic Area: Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy

"Having a Bangladesh placement has been a truly phenomenal experience for numerous reasons. During this placement I was given the freedom and opportunity to really develop myself as a therapist. I feel this placement has equipped me with this skill, which will be beneficial when I graduate"

The School of Community Health has been running a program for fourth year students to the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) since 2011. Students will work in their disciplinary team with people who have had a spinal injury or other neurological impairment. Students will be supervised by a CSU staff member, by CRP occupational  therapy and physiotherapy staff members, and by occupational therapy and physiotherapy staff members from Royal Rehabilitation Hospital in Sydney.

The Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed, commonly known as CRP, was founded in 1979 by a small group of Bangladeshis and a British physiotherapist, Valerie Taylor. Set in around 13 acres of land, the centre comprises an extensive range of services for disabled people as well as CRP's academic institute, the Bangladesh Health Professions Institute (BHPI) and CRP's inclusive school. The CRP is just outside of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The goal of this program is to establish a mutually beneficial, long term relationship between CRP, the School of Community Health, and the Royal Rehabilitation Centre that facilitates an improved quality of life for the clients.

Students are advised that there is a compulsory two-day training program that they must attend in Sydney, run by the Royal Rehabilitation Centre and CSU staff, prior to departing for Bangladesh. The dates for this pre-departure training program are to be advised. More information about CRP can be found through its website.

This program is partially funded by the Australian Government’s Study Overseas Short-term Mobility Program through the Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research and Tertiary Education. CSU recognises the support of the Australian Government in providing targeted funds which have subsidised the cost of this program to students.
