Pathways students

Wondering what your options for getting into uni are? Pathways are an alternative form of entry into courses at CSU. Whether you are a school leaver, a TAFE student or someone looking to return to study after some time away, options exist to assist you in successfully entering university.

Many people have the desire to study at university but haven't yet had the opportunity. It may be that you didn't finish Year 12, or you didn't receive the HSC/VCE mark required for direct entry into a course. Perhaps you went straight into the workforce, or started a family, and then felt that a university qualification was unobtainable. Maybe you're seeking a career change and wish to commence re-training for a new profession.

Whatever the reason, CSU offers a range of pathways to a university degree.

Diploma of General Studies

This Pathways Program is aimed at recent school leavers who wish to study at CSU but do not meet the entry criteria or require further preparation.

The Diploma is a combination of four subjects from the TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate, and four CSU Bachelor level subjects studied over two 17 week sessions. The subjects will provide a solid preparation for your university studies and an elective subject from the discipline of your choice will introduce you to your degree.

On successful completion of the CSU Pathway Program students will receive:

  • Diploma of General Studies from CSU
  • Certificate IV (Tertiary Preparation Certificate or Further Education) from TAFE
  • Guaranteed entry into CSU degrees (non competitive)
  • In some cases, credit for up to four of the CSU subjects.

If you are interested in the CSU Pathways Program, you should apply directly to CSU.

TAFE to CSU

TAFE NSWCSU has a number of pathway programs that combine TAFE and University study.

There are two types of TAFE to CSU pathway programs known as Articulation Programs and Integrated Programs.

  • Articulation Programs allow students to study and complete qualifications at TAFE first and then go on to complete their CSU study.
  • Integrated Programsallow students to study at TAFE and CSU at the same time. Students are co-enrolled at both institutions.

Single Subject Study

Single Subject StudySingle Subject Study is a pathway into undergraduate courses as it allows students to demonstrate their capabilities in studying at the tertiary level.

With the flexible delivery of Single Subject Study, you may choose to study one or more subjects. Many subjects in the Single Subject Study program are open entry, which means there are no prerequisites for entry.

Successful completion of two single subjects can provide you with an entry pathway to the degree you wish to pursue, with credit in some cases, or you can build your own degree one subject at a time!

Subjects are open entry, requiring no prior knowledge or prerequisites.

CSU Training

CSU TrainingYou could choose to study a vocational qualification with CSU Training, CSU's Registered Training Organisation (RTO) before enrolling into University, and gain credit towards your degree. You can enrol at any time that suits you and commence when you are ready. This flexibility allows students who may have missed the university enrolment date to study a vocational qualification, gain workplace experience and then receive credit for the qualification when they enrol in university.

CSU Training graduates have found this to be an ideal way to get back into study and to gain sound practical knowledge before moving into University study.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Work experience or qualifications gained through your employer or an RTO may also provide credit to CSU degrees, for example, industry specific qualifications in health, management, or dispute resolution may reduce the time you spend attaining a university degree.

Credit Packages

Credit arrangements exist between CSU and other Australian Universities so that previous study or attainment can act as a pathway to University study, and enable you to fast track your degree.

Darrambal Skills Assessment Program

Indigenous studentsThe CSU Darrambal Skills Assessment Program offers an alternative entry pathway for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people interested in going to university. Operated by the Indigenous Student Services, the program offers students the opportunity to stay at the University for a few days to attend classes, learn some skills essential to success at university, find out about university life and meet staff in a supportive and caring environment. Mature age Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and recent school leavers are encouraged to attend.

HSC Board Endorsed Nursing Program

The HSC Nursing Program allows a transitional link for Higher School Certificate students interested in pursuing a career in nursing at Charles Sturt University. The HSC Nursing Program is a 2 unit NSW Board of Studies endorsed course that allows Year 12 students to complete two nursing subjects frm the Bachelor of Nursing and then gain entry to CSU into the Bachelor of Nursing degree. Credit is then given for the two completed subjects.

The course is conducted in two stages; students must have completed Stage 1 in Year 11 to enter the HSC component:

  • Stage I will be conducted by TAFE NSW and is for Year 11 students.
  • Stage II (the university component of the non-award course) is for HSC Year 12 students. Students enrolled in Stage II of the course will attend face to face classes on CSU campuses as well as undertake a two week (60 hours) clinical placement in a health care facility.

Students successfully completing both Stage I and Stage Il can then apply for entry to the Bachelor of Nursing through the Principals Report Entry Program (PREP). On admission, credit will be granted for the two subjects studied in Year 12.
