Configuring your iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad to access CSU resources

Students and staff may connect their iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad to the secure wireless network to access online resources. iOS Software Update 2 is the minimum requirement for those wanting to connect to the wireless network.

The instructions provided are for iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad using iOS Software Update 4 or above, if you have an earlier version you should use iTunes to update your device. You can still configure your Apple device to access online services but may notice the steps or views are a little different.

Before attempting connection you should have your CSU username and password. If your password has expired you will be unable to connect. You can easily view how many days left until your password must be changed (or it will expire) by logging into my.csu and checking the Password toolbox on the left hand side of the screen (above Quicklinks).

Connecting to our secure wireless network - CSUconnect

Ensure your Wi-Fi is turned on (on your home screen touch Settings, Wi-Fi, if it says off, tap to turn on)

Click the How to Connect heading on the Wireless @ CSU page to view the steps required for connection.

Accessing the Internet using the IAS

If you have an iPad 2 that has no navigation buttons except Cancel in the IAS popup go to the iPad 2 known issues section below to find out how to resolve this issue.

The IAS (Internet Access System) requires the keep alive popup window be left open to maintain access to the Internet but Apple devices require an additional step. When using the Internet on an Apple device you must switch to the keep alive popup window within 15 minutes eg every 14 minutes to maintain your access.

The keep alive window sends a signal back to the IAS every 15 minutes to confirm you are still using the Internet. On Apple devices this signal is not sent if the keep alive window stays in the background. If no signal is received after 15 minutes you will be automatically logged out. This issue only affects Apple devices and a solution should be implemented by the end of 2011.

Those who do not have 3G capable Apple devices and are only using the wireless network on campus will notice some applications are unable to access the Internet. An alternative way of accessing most information provided by the more common applications is to use the Safari web browser eg login to Facebook, access google maps, view and search for videos on youtube and look up the weather.

iPad 2 known issue with keep alive popup

No navigation buttons except for Cancel when keep alive popup opens, inability to open another page to browse web sites. When popup is closed and another page opened, access to the Internet is terminated after 15 minutes.

You can quickly and easily resolve this issue by following the steps below to clear the Safari browsers History, Cookies and cache on your iPad 2

1. From your home screen tap Settings, tap Safari
2. Tap each of the 3 buttons Clear History, Clear Cookies, Clear Cache, press again to confirm when asked for each
3. Restart your iPad

You should now be able to open a new page from the keep alive popup.

CSU staff email

The Mail application can be configured to provide access to your email account on your Apple device. Please click the link below for instructions.

Email retrieval settings for Apple email application

Your device will automatically download new email according to the Fetch New Data settings

To view Fetch New Data screen

If Push is turned on emails will be pushed to your phone from the server, this means they will be delivered to your phone when they are received by the CSU mail server. If Push is turned off you can select how often you want new mail automatically delivered to your phone or you can select Manual to retrieve it when you open Mail.

The frequency with which you fetch can affect your battery life, battery life refers to how long your battery lasts after being charged. If Fetch is set to every 15 minutes it will use the charge faster than if it were set to hourly. If Push is turned on and mail delivered frequently, it will also reduce your battery level faster than having it set to manual. Tips on extending battery life can be found here.

Note: When you update your CSU password, your device may prompt you to update. In this case say 'yes' and enter your new password. Go to 'Settings', then 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars'. Tap the 'Account' button and go to the password field and change your password. Then click on 'Done'.
