Project Description

With the relocation of the Charles Sturt University Albury-Wodonga campus form central Albury to Thurgoona, the Thurgoona Campus will become the primary campus for the region. Campus development to date has been in an environmentally sensitive manner form site planning and building design to on-site management of water and waste.

The original Learning Commons design, won through an Architectural Design Completion in 2006, was ultimately dropped in favour of a new concept design that met the functional requirement of the users and could be completed within a budge of $9.5m.lc image

The building has a floor area of 2200 square metres and has been designed and constructed using a number of environmentally sustainable design principles including energy use minimisation through a Building Management System, rainwater collection, automated lighting controls, two solar hot water systems, lightweight insulated roofing and natural ventilation.

The new Learning Commons will be the signature building of CSU Thurgoona and provide a "student centred" space, focused on improving student learning at the university. It will comprise offices for Library, Indigenous and Student services staff, the Library Collection, computer laboratories, a variety of study and work spaces and provision of a 24 hour informal study lounge area, all designed to create the focal hub of the campus.

It has met the key design objectives, continuing the environmental focus of the campus and satisfies the functional and access objective of the design brief. Its location, adjacent to the teaching and learning spaces, places it centrally within the Learning Precinct of the campus, fulfilling the university vision to create a vibrant, student-focused learning environment.
