Division of Human Resources

Introduction to Tasks- Casual Academic Staff

Information

Managers should ensure the casual appointee has the skills to perform the role prior to the appointment being made. However, there will be cases where workplace-specific training is required to perform the role. In these cases Heads of School must arrange for suitable opportunities to ensure the casual staff member has the necessary skills to be able to deliver quality learning and teaching services to students.

The Manager will assess the needs of the casual staff member to determine a suitable skill development program to take into account the staff member's previous experience, the length of their employment, and the nature of the work being undertaken.

For casual staff new to academic work, the Manager may choose to use the Foundations of University Learning and Teaching resource developed by the Division of Teaching and Learning Services. This resource has been designed for new academic staff and relates specifically to skill development in learning and teaching.
