Workplace Orientation- Casual Academic Staff

Managers will provide casual on-campus staff with a suitable workplace orientation which may include introduction to people, facilities, equipment, and local work environment.
Workplace orientation will also apply to off-campus engagements i.e. who to contact, what support is available, etc. Schools may choose to use (or adapt) the existing induction resource Information Handbook for Staff in Schools [DOC] which includes information about school administration arrangements. |

| Check whether the person is legally entitled to work in Australia (see HR if clarification is required) |
| Confirm start date, length of trial period, rate of pay, hours of work, where to park, what to bring, dress requirements and outline duties |
| Advise other staff of the person's arrival and role |
| Assign a coach/buddy to assist and train the person and ensure the coach/buddy allocates time to spend with the person on the first day |
| Ensure the person's workstation is set up (clean and well equipped – computer, telephone, all required equipment is available) |
| Determine which IT systems (Microsoft Office Suite, Concept, Banner) the person will need to use and arrange access using DIT's online ad hoc access form |
| Collect materials to be provided to the person on their first day (see Essential Induction Information for Casual Staff) |
| Task |
| Introduce the person to their coach/buddy and other key personnel and explain their roles |
| Explain the duties to be performed and the standard of work required |
| Provide essential information for casual staff, give the person time to read it and discuss it with them |
| Explain how to complete timesheets, including meal breaks |
| Demonstrate how to use equipment (telephone, IT systems, safety equipment) and access information (communications directory) |
| Advise the person of work protocols and routines (addressing other staff, answering the telephone, delegations, mail systems, acronyms, jargon) |
| Conduct a tour of facilities (kitchen, toilets, HR Office, food outlets etc) |
| Explain specific OH&S requirements (manual handling, ergonomics) and provide general information (fire exits, first aid officers, security) |
| Reinforce equity principles in dealing with internal and external clients |
| Arrange library access through the community borrowing scheme (only if required for the position, for example research assistants) |

| Ensure timesheets are complete, accurate and submitted to HR on time (see below) |
| Provide feedback on performance |
| Arrange workplace-specific training if required |
| Give the person an appropriate period of notice if their services are no longer required or their performance is unsatisfactory |
| Task |
| Ensure all personal details have been completed |
| Include the school/section, description of work, classification level and account code, and print your name when you authorise a timesheet |
| Make sure the timesheet is legible |
| Check that hours and breaks have been recorded accurately (preferably in 24 hour time) |
| Submit timesheets to the HR Office by the pay claim deadline (see the pay day calendar) |
