PLANNING INDUCTION (casual staff)

The principles of the Induction and Development Program will apply to casual staff (i.e. orientation, compliance requirements, performance requirements, introduction to tasks, and feedback on performance). Each Faculty and Division will determine individual programs that take into account the length of their employment, the hours employed and the nature of the work being undertaken.

Induction for off-campus casual general staff

A proportion of casual staff perform their activities off campus. When designing programs and resources for casual staff, Faculty and Divisions must consider how the induction program can be provided to off-campus staff.

Managers must make decisions regarding the most appropriate choice of media to deliver the program – written, electronic, face-to-face sessions etc.

Additionally Managers must be aware that there may be differing legislative requirements that apply to casual staff in different geographical locations. For casual staff engaged off-campus within Australia, Managers need to be aware that there may be specific legal obligations in that jurisdiction that may need to be taken into account. Managers should discuss such arrangements on a case by case basis with the Director Employee Relations.

For staff engaged off campus the OH&S induction may also include a discussion of the type of work they are performing and the setup of their place of work.

The Division of Human Resources has developed a Managers Guide and Checklists as part of the CSU Induction and Development program which may be of assistance in planning induction for casual staff. The Division will also provide consultancy service for Managers to develop and embed programs for casual staff.
