Employing Casual Staff
A casual employee shall mean and refer to an employee engaged by the hour and paid on an
hourly basis that includes a loading and which is an all inclusive rate in compensation for the casual nature of the appointment and of all forms of leave, excluding long service leave.
Terms of Appointment
Academic Staff
Where the University engages an employee in the form of a casual academic staff appointment, the following information shall be provided to the employee:
- Period of employment.
- Duties to be performed
- Estimated maximum number of hours to be worked
- Rate of pay
General Staff
Where the University engages an employee in the form of a casual general staff appointment, the following terms apply:
- Minimum of 3 hours per engagement and a maximum 6 months engagement
- Overtime applies after 10 hours in one day
- No more than 5 hours work without a minimum half hour break
- Notice period of 1 hour
- Applicable casual hourly rate
Note: Where the University engages students of the University or examination supervisors in the form of a casual staff appointment, the following exception applies:
- Minimum of 1 hour per engagement
- Student rate applies for students; and
- Examination Supervisor rates are as per Part B (vi)

Administrative Arrangements - for Casual Staff
| Steps for Administrative Arrangements | |
| 1 | Ask the person to provide the School/Unit with a CV and original evidence of their qualifications. |
| 2 | Check the Enterprise Agreement to ascertain the appropriate rate for the work to be performed (see Schedules I and II for details). |
| 3 | For Academic Staff limit the appointment to no more than 60% of the notional teaching contact hours of a full-time employee, including distance education. |

Complete the Contract of Employment for Casual Academic Staff / Casual General Staff as appropriate and submit this with their Tax File Number Declaration form and Australian banking details to HR prior to their start date. The UniSuper Product Disclosure Statment (PDS) for the Accumulation 1 account applicable to casual employees is available on their website here. The application form can be found at the back of the PDS. |
| 5 | Advise and provide instruction to the person on how to complete a timesheet via Web Kiosk in order to be paid. |

Classifying of Levels - General Staff

Induction Compliance and Ethical Requirements

| Responsibilities | Staff employed by CSU should be inducted in a consistent manner in their compliance and ethical responsibilities, regardless of their classification of employment. Managers will ensure the casual staff member is aware of and understands their obligations in relation to employment conditions and performance. |
