Tier 4 - Vice-Chancellor's Awards (Commencing 2009)
There will be a maximum of 12 Vice-Chancellor’s Awards, valued at $4000 for an individual and $8000 to be shared among a team for individual or team purposes. These awards comprise:
- 2 individual and/or team awards for Teaching Excellence
- 2 individual and/or team awards for Research Excellence
- 1 individual or team award for Research Supervision Excellence
- 1 individual or team award for Professional Excellence
- 2 individual awards for Leadership Excellence
- 4 individual and/or team awards for Performance Excellence

Staff eligibility
The Vice-Chancellor’s Awards are open to all academic/general staff members (depending on the award category’s target group) who currently hold a continuing or fixed-term appointment at CSU on a basis of 0.4 or greater, have competed two years of service at CSU, and have successfully completed probation. The awards do not apply to casual, honorary, visiting, adjunct or executive staff.
Nominees for an Individual Award:
- must have received a Faculty/Division Award (in any award category) or an external citation (e.g. ALTC citation for outstanding contribution to student learning) at some point in their employment at CSU. NOTE: In the first few years of the integrated awards scheme, there will be some flexibility to allow a staff member to be nominated if they do not meet this criterion.
- may include staff who received an external award for the same achievement
- may include staff who received a Vice-Chancellor’s Team Award in an earlier year for a different achievement
- may not include staff who received a Vice-Chancellor’s Individual Award in the same award category within the previous three years
- may not be nominated for a Vice-Chancellor’s Team Award for the same achievement
Nominees for a Team Award:
- must include at least one member who has received a rating of Outstanding Performance in the current performance management round
- may include academic and/or general staff, from one or more sections and/or campuses, who have made a sustained contribution to the team’s achievement
- may include staff who received a Vice-Chancellor’s Individual or Team Award in an earlier year for a different achievement
- may not be nominated for a Vice-Chancellor’s Individual Award for the same achievement
Nominations
The Division of Human Resources annually invites applications for the Vice-Chancellor’s Individual and Team Awards. Nominations may be submitted from 1 March to 30 April by:
- Deans/Executive Directors/Deputy Vice-Chancellors for Faculty/Division Award recipients; and
- staff, students (current or former within the past three years) and/or other members of the CSU community.
Nominations are to be based on outstanding achievement/performance over a sustained period for staff who meet the eligibility conditions.
NOTE: Self-nominations will not be accepted for the Vice-Chancellor’s Awards in Teaching Excellence, Research Supervision Excellence , Professional Excellence, Leadership Excellence and Performance Excellence.
Selection process
Each award category has its own selection committee, with a Deputy Vice-Chancellor as the Presiding Officer.The committees may seek further information from the nominators or nominees to assist the selection process. They select the most outstanding nominees, based on achievements in relation to a nominee’s classification level and selection criteria for the Vice-Chancellor’s Awards, and make recommendations for Individual and Team Awards to the Vice-Chancellor. The decision of the Vice-Chancellor is final, and not subject to review or appeal.

Award Value
The financial value of the awards is transferred into the relevant Faculty/Division account to be used in accordance with the wishes of the staff member or team to enhance their professional development, research and/or work. NOTE: If equipment is purchased with the award money, it may be used exclusively by the staff member or team for the duration of their employment but remains the property of the University. An award may not be taken as cash.
Expenditure of the financial award must be approved by the staff member's manager.
Announcement and presentation of awards
Formal announcement of the recipients of the Vice-Chancellor’s Awards occurs at the combined Faculty/Division/Vice-Chancellor’s Awards presentation ceremony in Wagga Wagga and Bathurst. Award recipients also receive a certificate, and are recorded on the CSU web site and Alesco database.
Expectations of award recipients
Recipients of the Vice-Chancellor’s Awards are normally expected to make their philosophy and/or practices in teaching, research, research supervision, professional activity or leadership more widely known through the University, e.g. through participation in seminars or presentations, writing a paper, acting as a resource person or mentor, or applying for an external award. NOTE: These expectations do not apply to recipients of the Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Performance Excellence.
