Aim

To recognise and encourage excellence in teaching and to acknowledge the central place of teaching and learning in the University.

Staff Eligibility

The Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Teaching Excellence are open to all academic staff members, up to and including Level E, who:

The awards do not apply to casual, honorary, visiting, adjunct or executive staff.

Nominations

The Division of Human Resources annually invites applications for the Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Teaching Excellence from Individuals and Teams. Nominations may be submitted from 1 March to 30 April by:

One academic peer of CSU (may include Dean) or its enterprises, and one student (current or former within the past three years). If the nomination is from a former student, the student must have been taught by the academic within the past three years.

Nominations are to be based on outstanding achievement/performance over a sustained period of three or more years for staff who meet the eligibility conditions.

Self-nominations will not be accepted for the Vice-Chancellor's Awards in Teaching Excellence.

The selection criteria for the Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Teaching Excellence are:

1. Approaches to teaching that influence, motivate and inspire students to learn

Which may include: fostering student development by stimulating curiosity and independence in learning; contributing to the development of students’ critical thinking skills, analytical skills and scholarly values; encouraging student engagement through the enthusiasm shown for learning and teaching; inspiring and motivating students through high-level communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.

2. Development of curricula and resources that reflect a command of the field

Which may include: developing and presenting coherent and imaginative resources for student learning; implementing research-led approaches to learning and teaching; demonstrating up-to-date knowledge of the field of study in the design of the curriculum and the creation of resources for learning; communicating clear objectives and expectations for student learning.

3. Approaches to assessment and feedback that foster independent learning

Which may include: integrating assessment strategies with the specific aims and objectives for student learning; providing timely, worthwhile feedback to students on their learning; using a variety of assessment and feedback strategies; implementing both formative and summative assessment; adapting assessment methods to different contexts and diverse student needs.

4. Respect and support for the development of students as individuals

Which may include: participating in the effective and empathetic guidance and advising of students; assisting students from equity and other demographic subgroups to participate and achieve success in their courses; influencing the overall academic, social and cultural experience of higher education.

5. Scholarly activities that have influenced and enhanced learning and teaching

Which may include: showing advanced skills in evaluation and reflective practice; participating in and contributing to professional activities related to learning and teaching; coordination, management and leadership of courses and student learning; conducting and publishing research related to teaching; demonstrating leadership through activities that have broad influence on the profession.

In assessing nominations against the five selection criteria, the Selection Committee will take into account:

the extent to which the claims for excellence are supported by formal and informal evaluation;

extent of creativity, imagination or innovation, irrespective of whether the approach involves traditional learning environments or technology-based developments; and

The five selection criteria will be given equal consideration by the Selection Committee.

It is hoped that this correspondence will enable CSU applicants to extend their Vice-Chancellor's Teaching Excellence Awards into ALTC applications.

Selection Process

The selection committee for the Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Excellence Award comprises the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) as its Presiding Officer and the University Learning and Teaching Committee. This Committee will make a recommendation to the Vice-Chancellor for the Awards from the nominations received.

Award Value

$4000 for an individual award.

$8000 to be shared among a team.

Announcement and presentation of awards

Formal announcement of the recipients of the Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Teaching Excellence occurs at the combined Faculty/Division/Vice-Chancellor's Awards presentation ceremony in Wagga Wagga and Bathurst around the end of June 2009.

Expectations of award recipients

Award recipients are normally expected to make their teaching philosophies and/or practices more widely known throughout the University. For example, they may be invited to participate in seminars or presentations, write a paper, act as a resource person, or act as a mentor to their colleagues with respect to teaching. They will also be encouraged to apply for the Australian Learning and Teaching Council’s Awards for Australian University Teaching.
