History of development and approval process of Subject Experience Survey

In July 2010, Senate initiated a review of CSU’s Online Evaluation of Subjects (OES). A Working Party of the Sub-Deans (L&T) and representatives from DLTS, and FLI and EFPI was set up by the DVC (Academic). The DVC (Academic) and Deans asked that this review also consider the common teaching standards and expectations of academic staff  around 1) currency; 2) responsiveness to students; 3) compliance with timelines; 4) assessment; and 5) subject-course linkages.

Phase 1

  • Literature review.
  • Survey of practices at other institutions.
  • Feedback on the OES from all of the Schools at CSU.

Phase 2

  • Development of items including separate Workplace Learning scale based on principles of good teaching.
  • Use of a 5-point scale focused on extent/presence and frequency of occurrence of construct factors rather than global judgments or opinions of satisfaction. Meaning of mid-point clear.

Phase 3

  • Trialling and validating survey with Internal and DE cohorts in a wide range of subjects with approximately 1300 respondents. This was followed up by some phone interviews. The quantitative data was analysed by CSU’s Quantitative Consulting Unit.

Recommendations for the SES were approved by Academic Senate on 30th November 2011 with  to some minor negotiated changes.

Phase 4

Selection and implementation of new Evaluation system through IP:ISI funded project.
