Workshop program
Block 1. Orientation
Theme - View of the macrocosm:
Education at CSU
- locate and gain a critical appreciation of the CSU vision and the strategic roles of the teaching institutes
- scan CSU’s discipline profile and educational footprint (graduate destinations)
locate and acknowledge the policies, regulations and procedures that shape CSU teaching practice - consider the description of the effective teacher at CSU as a yardstick for one’s professional development
Theme - Views from the microcosm:
Focus on student learning
Getting organised
- explore the implications of a commitment to the needs of learners
- develop and share problem-solving tactics for the first weeks of teaching in unfamiliar or trying conditions
Theme - Who offers support?

Academic skills development

Inclusive teaching support
- develop understanding of several contemporary issues in higher education
- contribute to a group learning and artefact creation activity
- develop relationships with CSU teaching support staff.
Block 2. Academic writing and assessment
Theme - Cultivating one’s scholarly voice
- reflect on how we incorporate the work of others in our own writing and teaching, and on how we learned to do this
- pool ideas for strategies to develop an authentic scholarly voice in our students
- draft a student performance objective about the scholarly voice that is appropriate to one’s discipline
Theme - Academic integrity, plagiarism and CSU’s approach
- explore staff perceptions of plagiarism
- suggest strategies to encourage academic honesty in student assessments
- identify CSU’s policy and procedures
Theme - Criterion-referenced assessment design
- Develop understanding and skills to
- establish learning objectives
- design tasks that will motivate and evaluate students’ coverage of all objectives
- assign criteria that cover the objectives of each task
- establish standards of adequate performance for each criterion to ensure that a student’s mark in each one reflects his/her performance relative to ‘adequate performance’
- determine how the marks against the criteria will be conflated in order to give a valid, reliable and indicative grade/mark for the particular task
Block 3. Effective teaching encounters
Theme - Teaching as communicating – across the room ... across the ether
- work in groups to draft a framework to gauge the effectiveness of communication in teaching episodes – lectures, tutorials, teaching texts, online, individual interactions
Theme - Learning as collaborating – tutorials and online
- share understandings of the nature of collaborative learning in the classroom and online
- consider strategies to encourage interaction/collaboration in learning
Theme - Learning and teaching as engaging
- consider the activity–passivity continuum as a legitimate space to skate within in one’s long distance journey of learning across the range of learning styles
- identify strategies to help all students set and actively pursue their personal learning goals
Block 4. Taking stock, moving on
Theme - Reflecting on practice: the teaching portfolio
- recognise various uses of a portfolio and overview various possible portfolio media and formats
Theme - The critical disposition and subject evaluations: customising your subject survey
- consider how to embed observation and critique into subject design, planning and delivery
- become proficient in customising an online subject survey in the light of the subject objectives
Theme - The first leg of the journey in review; getting ready for the TTC
- work in groups to produce then share a text, multimedia or enacted artefact that juxtaposes group impressions of teaching at CSU; as a whole group, rate artefacts according to negotiated criteria
- reflect on the effectiveness of various forms of support experienced by new teaching staff and consider what participant attitudes and strategies will most likely lead to a successful TTC experience.
