Clone an Outline

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

You may opt to create the new Outline based on a ‘clone’ of a previously created Outline.  ‘Clone’ enables reuse of all editable content from the selected Outline; including any section content tags.  Regardless of who originally authored the content, all editable sections of the cloned Outline can then be edited by the Author of the cloned Outline to suit the subject offering/s for which the Outline was cloned.

IMPORTANT: be sure to review and amend cloned dates as necessary, e.g. schedule, assessment due dates, etc

As opposed to cloning the entire set of authored content to create a new Outline, Authors can also choose to reuse content on a per section or per assessment basis.  To learn more see Reuse Outline content.

How to initiate the Clone function

There are a few ways to initiate the cloning of an existing Outline.

Create New Outline

In Step 1 of the 'Create New Outline' screen, select ‘Yes’ then click on ‘Search for an Outline to clone' to initiate a search to find the Outline you wish to clone.  Once you have found the Outline, you are able to either select ‘Clone’ from the Search results list pop-up menu options OR select to View the Outline and click the 'Clone' button within the View screen.

My Outlines or Search Results list

Click on the Outline you wish to clone and select Clone (if available) from the pop-up menu.  This will forward you to the Create New Outline screen where Step 1 will be pre-populated, i.e. the clone option and the Outline to clone are pre-selected.

The components of a cloned Outline

A cloned Outline is not an exact replica of the source Outline because each subject must use a specific template and have certain rules, enterprise data and non-editable Autotext applied to it.  Rather, a clone is the created from the components depicted on the left hand side of the diagram below - they are:

The template sections and section rules effective for the subject and session;
Enterprise data specific to the subject offering including the Coordinator;
Non-editable Autotext specific to the subject relating to policy and authoritative subject data (e.g. study mode and existence of a residential school);
All authored or editable section content from the 'Source Outline' if the section exists within the clone template.  It is important to note that editable Autotext content is cloned regardless of whether the default Autotext has been edited.  Once editable Autotext content has been cloned, the Autotext can be refreshed to the default Autotext effective for the specific subject and/or session by clicking the Autotext Refresh icon within the section menu. See Autotext Refresh to learn more about refreshing editable Autotext with the effective default content.

See Reuse Outline content to learn about reusing content (per section or per assessment).
