Scholarship in Teaching Fund: Guidelines and Dates

Preamble

The University has established the Scholarship in Teaching Fund to support and enhance learning and teaching. The scholarship of teaching is the systematic and rigorous reflection on university learning and teaching by academic staff. It includes the development and evaluation of new approaches to teaching, critical discourse about learning and teaching, and analyses of professional and institutional cultures and frameworks as they bear on learning and teaching. The scholarship of teaching is relevant to all disciplines and professional fields within the University.

Purposes

The purposes of the Scholarship in Teaching Fund are:

i. to promote research and scholarship in university learning and teaching within CSU
ii. to enhance the capacity of CSU to reflect on, evaluate and improve its learning and teaching practices
iii. to support priorities for research and scholarship in learning and teaching identified in the University’s Learning and Teaching Plan

Operation

i. Funding will be allocated on a competitive basis to applications assessed against the criteria set out in (3) below.
ii. Funding will be allocated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) or nominee on advice of the Learning and Teaching Committee.
iii. Applications for funding will be called for in March of each year.
iv. Funds will be available for expenditure from June of the year in which an application is approved. Funds are expected to be expended by December of the following year. Funds may not be carried forward beyond that time without approval of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) or nominee.
v. Normally grants from the Fund will not exceed $10,000 for any project, although the total funding for a project from all sources may exceed this amount.
vi. Applications for funding should include:

viii. The Learning and Teaching Committee may seek advice on applications from within or outside the University.
ix. Funding would be dependent on the Ethics in Human Research Committee approval if appropriate.
x. A report on completion, including a summary suitable for promulgation in the University, must be submitted to the Learning and Teaching Committee.

Criteria

i. the merit of the proposal as research and scholarship in teaching;
ii. capacity to enhance reflection on and development of learning and teaching at CSU beyond the normal role expected of a subject or course coordinator;
iii. linkage to disciplines or fields within the University’s profile;
iv. alignment with priorities for the scholarship of learning and teaching identified in the Learning and Teaching Plan;
v. effective dissemination strategies, within the University and through publication and conference presentation.
vi. capacity of project to lead to further research and scholarship, including external funding.
Note: normally learning resource development will only be supported if it involves an innovative project which is systematically evaluated, with the results available for dissemination within the University.
