There are several key stages in the Educational Design process for quality learning materials especially for online delivery and multimedia. The Learning Design must be constructively aligned with learning objectives in order to provide optimal learning experiences for students.

A range of strategies can be used to develop learning designs and resources, one of which is the ADDIE model. This model uses the stages of analyse, design, develop, implement and evaluate to create educational resources.

The following quote is from a website that refers to presentation but it applies to all design:

Design starts at the beginning not at the end; it's not an afterthought.... It's during the preparation stage that you slow down and "stop your busy mind" so that you may consider your topic and your objectives, your key messages, and your audience. Only then will you begin to sketch out ideas — on paper or just in your head — that will soon find themselves in some digital visual form later.
