EBSCOhost (Health) is a package of EBSCOhost databases put together by CSU Library with bibliographic and some full-text material on Health and related subject areas. These databases all have the option to limit searches to scholarly (peer-reviewed) journals..

EBSCOhost databases can be searched individually or in combination.

MEDLINE is recognized as the premier index of biomedical literature, and includes allied health fields, plus the biological and physical sciences, humanities, and information science as they relate to health care. It is produced by the United States National Library of Medicine and covers thousands of international journals from 1950 - .

It is primarily a database of citations, but the Ovid version includes links to some full text journal titles from the database CSU Full Text Journals@Ovid, listed in the CSU databases lists as Journals@Ovid CSU Full Text Subscribed.

MEDLINE is provided by Ovid in various date packages. The Ovid database MEDLINE In-Process & Other Non-Indexed Citations consists of In-Process records (records in preparation) from the National Library of Medicine and “PubMed-not-MEDLINE” records from NLM.

PubChem is a free resource available as three separate but linked databases which contain the chemical structures of small organic molecules, and information on their biological activities. It aims “to provide a public online resource of comprehensive information on the biological activities of small molecules … to molecular biologists as well as computational and medicinal chemists”.

The three databases are:
PubChem Substance - Search unique chemical structures using names, synonyms or keywords.
PubChem Compound  - Search deposited chemical substance records using names, synonyms or keywords.
PubChem BioAssay - Search bioassay records using terms from the bioassay description.

PubChem also provides a chemical structure similarity search tool, and a BioActivity Summary service.

PubChem is part of the Entrez search and retrieval system, which also gives access to PubMed and other biomedical databases. The system is maintained by the US National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), a component of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), which is in turn part of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). Chemical structure records within PubChem include links to other Entrez databases, providing information on biological properties. These include links to PubMed scientific literature and NCBI's protein 3D structure resource.

All aspects of health care administration and other non-clinical aspects of health care institution management, including hospital management, hospital administration, marketing, human resources, computer technology, facilities management and insurance.

Contains the full text of more than 450 journals. Full text titles are available in HTML full-text or (searchable) PDF format. Coverage varies, with some full text content from 1965- .

Meditext is an Australian indexing and full text database with access to scanned images of journal articles on all aspects of health and medicine, with an emphasis on clinical medicine and paraprofessional fields.

Other source documents include conference proceedings, government reports, selected books, and National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) session reports (to 1996).

Coverage: 1968 - . Full text coverage (from 90 comprehensively indexed journals): 1995 - .

Wiley InterScience is a database of journals published by Wiley-Blackwells Publishing.

CSU has access to the bulk of this collection in full-text – nearly 1300 journals. Users can search the collection using a simple or advanced search, and can browse by title or subject area.

Subjects covered range across all disciplines: Business, Education, Law, Medicine, Science, Social Sciences, and the Humanities.

Coverage dates vary with title.

Note: CSU previously had access to this material under the separate listings of Blackwell Synergy, and Wiley InterScience. On I July 2008 Blackwell Publishing merged with John Wiley & Sons, and all Wiley-Blackwell’s online products are now provided in a single online platform.

The Cochrane Library is the main product of the Cochrane Collaboration, which is "an international not-for-profit and independent organization, dedicated to making up-to-date, accurate information about the effects of health care readily available". Its stated role is to make available systematic reviews of healthcare interventions, while promoting the search for evidence in the form of clinical trials and other studies of interventions.

Thus the Cochrane Library is one of the prime international and independent sources of evidence-based medicine information.

The major resource within the Cochrane Library is the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews: systematic reviews represent the highest level of evidence on which clinical decisions are based. But there actually 7 databases in the Cochrane Library, as follows:

These databases are available for searching and browsing using the Wiley InterScience interface. Much of the material, including the Cochrane Reviews, is available in full-text. The Cochrane Library is updated quarterly.

Cochrane Library is a subscription resource, but under an arrangement between the Australian Government and the Cochrane Collaboration, the resource is available free to internet users anywhere in Australia.

In addition to this, CSU users can access the 6 main Cochrane Library databases via the Ovid interface, where they are listed under the titles of “EBM Reviews”.

This database is an amalgamation of all the EBM Review databases available from Ovid. These include the following databases:

ScienceDirect contains over 1700 Elsevier Science journals, most from 1996 forward and some from 1993 forward. New titles are added on a regular basis.

ScienceDirect also contains full-text journals from other participating publishers.

ScienceDirect currently currently offers the full text of journals from AIChE, CRC Press, and ASM International, and either host or link to the full text content of Cell Press titles. It is the goal of ScienceDirect to offer subscribers an electronic full text "library" on a scale greater than anything previously available, containing content from a variety of leading STM publishers. CSU does not subscribe to all the full text titles included in ScienceDirect.

SAGE Journals Online is the platform providing online full-text access to the approximately 485 journals published by SAGE. These journals are in the subject areas of Business, Humanities, Social Sciences, Science, Technology, and Medicine.

CSU staff and students have some full-text access to most of the journals in this database.

The platform allows for searching within individual journal titles or across the whole database, and for browsing journals by title, or articles by discipline. The My Tools feature allows for customising the product, including creating alerts, saving citations and searches, and setting up “My Favourite Journals”.

All SAGE journal content is peer-reviewed with 46% of journals ranked in the Thomson Scientific 2005 Journal Citation Reports®.

Coverage varies according to each journal, but extends as far back as 1879.

Includes more than 1200 peer reviewed full text journals and a growing number of online books, including the series Lecture Notes in Computer Science. Subject areas include Education, Mathematics, Medicine, Science and Technology. Coverage varies.

Ovid lists this database as CSU Full Text Journals@Ovid. It is a subset of the database Journals@Ovid and, as such, contains only the 173 journals to which CSU subscribes in full-text.

These journals are mainly in the subject areas of medicine, nursing, psychology, and sports science.

All the results of searching this database will be in full-text.

Cambridge Journals Online includes approximately 100 full text journals in a range of subject areas, published by Cambridge University Press.

Oxford Journals is a collection of more than 200 full-text journals published by Oxford University Press.

These journals are from a variety of disciplines including the arts, humanities, law, life sciences, medicine, science, and social science.

Coverage is generally 1998 - . CSU users should have access to all post-1996 material in full-text.

Current Contents includes tables of contents and citations from journals from all disciplines. Abstracts are available for approximately 75% of records. Covers more than 7,000 international journals for the last five years.

There is no full-text of the articles in Current Contents but the SFX linking software can be used to locate full-text either in another online database or in a print holding in the library catalogue. In this database SFX is activated by clicking on the "Links" icon located beneath each citation.

Web of Science is an amalgamation of 3 citations databases including .....

These databases can be searched individually or together, and can be used to locate articles by a range of criteria. They can also be used to locate citing articles (ie articles that have cited a specific reference).

• The Arts & Humanities Citation Index is a multidisciplinary database covering the journal literature of the arts and humanities. It indexes 1,144 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals, as well as covering individually selected, relevant items from over 6,800 major science and social science journals.

• The Science Citation Index Expanded is a multidisciplinary database, with searchable abstracts, covering the journal literature of the sciences. It indexes more than 5,700 major journals across 164 scientific disciplines.

• The Social Sciences Citation Index is a multidisciplinary database, with searchable abstracts, covering the journal literature of the social sciences. It indexes more than 1,725 journals spanning 50 disciplines, as well as covering individually selected, relevant items from over 3,300 of the world's leading scientific and technical journals.

Produced by the American Chemical Society, SciFinder is a “research discovery tool” which allows for exploring the journal and patent literature from a range of scientific disciplines, including biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, materials science, agricultural science, and related sciences.

It includes online access to databases of the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) and to the MEDLINE database.

Sources include journals, patents, conference proceedings, dissertations, technical reports, and books.

CAplus (Scientific Literature and Patents)
More than 30 million patent and journal article references in the areas of biochemistry, organic chemistry, macromolecular chemistry, applied chemistry, and physical, inorganic, and analytical chemistry.

CAS REGISTRY    (Chemical Substances)
Collection of disclosed chemical substance information, with more than 45 million organic and inorganic substances and more than 60 million sequences.

CASREACT (Reactions)
Contains reaction information from the millions of published journal articles and patent documents selected for inclusion in Chemical Abstracts (CA).

CHEMCATS (Chemical Suppliers)
A catalogue database with information about commercially available chemicals and their worldwide suppliers.  Includes more than 34 million commercially available chemicals.

CHEMLIST (Regulated chemicals)
An electronic collection of thousands of chemical substances that are regulated in key markets across the globe.

MARPAT (Markush Structures)
A structure-searchable database of generic, hypothetical substances found in patent claims and disclosures.

Index to biomedical and health care literature, produced by the United States National Library of Medicine.

Ingenta is a database of current article summaries from more than 20,000 multidisciplinary journals with links to the full text of over 4,500 titles. The database can be searched for free.

CSU subscribes to a limited number of full-text journals via Ingenta.

For journals to which CSU does not subscribe, users can, for the majority of articles, choose a pay-per-view option, with electronic, fax, or Ariel delivery from Ingenta.

PubMed, developed by the National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the (US) National Library of Medicine (NLM), is a free database of citations to more than 16 million journal articles from over 4,600 of the world's most significant health sciences journals. These citations are to articles in journals in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, health care systems, and the life sciences.

The database consists primarily of citation-only references, but in some cases the LinkOut feature provides access to full-text articles at journal websites and in other web resources. PubMed includes links to most of the (full-text) articles in PubMed Central.

The bibliographic information in PubMed includes MEDLINE, but also includes additional material such as citations that precede the date a journal was selected for MEDLINE indexing. PubMed includes a journals database, which can be searched in various ways, and the My NCBI feature, which allows for saving results and searches and for setting up alerts.

Coverage extends back to the 1950s; the database is updated weekly.

PubMed Central (PMC) is a free digital full-text archive of life sciences and medical sciences journal literature, developed and managed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the (US) National Library of Medicine (NLM).

A list of the journals included in PubMed Central is available at the PMC Journal List. New journals are continually being added to the database.

The currency and age of material in PubMed Central varies by journal. Many journals make their content available in PMC as soon as it is published. Others may delay release of content in PMC for anywhere from a few months to a few years after publication, but most provide free access to full text within a year of publication.

NLM is digitising the earlier print issues of many of the PMC journals in order to provide online access to the complete run of issues of these journals. PMC has material dating back to mid- to late-1800s or early 1900s for some journals.

Health & Society Database is a subset of Australian Family & Society Abstracts (FAMILY), produced by the Australian Institute of Family Studies. FAMILY indexes and abstracts articles from published and unpublished material on research, policy and practice issues about, or of relevance to, Australian families, so this subset database contains material on health policy and services as they relate to Australian people and families.

Specific subjects include: the health and well being of families and individuals; health policy; health services; quality of life, morbidity, mortality and life expectancy; mental health and illness; health issues of particular concern to the aged, children and youth; Aboriginal health; pregnancy, birth; ethical aspects of health such as those surrounding abortion, euthanasia and reproductive technologies; health education and promotion; health administration; and economic issues.

The database excludes documents of a clinical nature. Coverage is from 1980 - .

APAIS-Health, produced by the National Library of Australia, is a subset of the APAIS database.  It is a bibliographic database that indexes articles from published material on  health and medicine in Australia, in particular the legal, social, economic and ethical aspects of health.

APAIS-Health comprehensively indexes approximately 250 journals. Overseas sources are also scanned for material on Australian subject matter. APAIS-Health also indexes very selectively from many other Australian journals and conference proceedings, as well as from overseas journals carrying articles with an Australian content.

Source documents include a wide range of periodicals, newspapers, scholarly journals, conference papers, and books. Clinical articles are not indexed.

The Rural and Remote Health Database (RURAL) is an Australian database of citations and article summaries and is produced by the Australian Rural Health Research Institute, Monash University.

Subjects include health issues and health-care in rural and remote areas, and the practice and educational needs of health providers, in particular medical practitioners and nurses, in rural and remote areas. The information is relevant to health providers, health planners, researchers, and members of rural and remote area communities.

Family & Society Plus is a database containing articles from published and unpublished material on research, policy, and practice issues about, or of relevance to, Australian families. It is based on an indexing and abstracting database produced by the Australian Institute of Family Studies, but with the addition of some full-text material.

Source documents range from journals and conference papers to annual reports, bibliographies, and theses.

Subject coverage includes: children and child development; adolescence and youth; the aged and services to the aged; marriage and divorce; adoption and foster care; child abuse and domestic violence; child care; family economics; counselling and therapy; employment and unemployment; family law; health; housing; minority families; population studies; social change and social issues; social and community services; and sexual attitudes and behaviours.

From January 1995 the focus on child abuse and child protection issues was expanded because at this time the National Child Protection Clearing House was established at the Institute.

Australian Public Affairs - Full Text (APA-FT), is an indexing and full text database that provides access to the scanned images of journal articles from published material on the social sciences and humanities. It is based on the journal indexing of the database Australian Public Affairs Information Service (APAIS), which is produced by the National Library of Australia.

Of the more than 2000 journals indexed, full-text access is included to nearly 500 journals, though more than half of these are only selectively indexed (that is, not all the items in the original issue of the journal are included in the database).

Subject coverage includes Australian business, health, current affairs, economics, humanities, law, leisure, literature, politics, and social sciences.

The Humanities and Social Sciences Collection is one of Informit’s e-Library collections. These collections are different from other Informit databases in that they are entirely full-text, and include full-text content from not only journals, but also monographs and books, conference proceedings, research papers, and reference materials.

All broad humanities and social sciences fields are covered, including:
Agriculture, Arts, Asian Studies, Business, Cultural Studies, Education, Health, Medicine, History, Indigenous Studies, Law, Media, Political Science, Reference, Social Sciences, Science and Technology.

Content is particularly sourced from Australian academic and professional associations, interest groups and research centres.

Journals@Ovid is a database of articles from journals which are available for subscription in full-text. It is an aggregate of hundreds of scientific, technical, and medical journals from over 50 publishers and societies.

CSU Library does not subscribe to all the journals indexed in this database. However, CSU Library does subscribe to the full text of 173 Journals@Ovid journals, mainly in the subject areas of medicine, nursing, psychology, and sports science.

So the results of searching Journals@Ovid will include a mix of citation-only and full-text results.

Please note that the 173 full-text journals are also available in the database CSU Full Text Journals@Ovid, listed in the CSU databases lists as Journals@Ovid CSU Full Text Subscribed.

Factiva is the successor to Dow Jones Interactive and Reuters Business Briefing, previously produced by Dow Jones Reuters Business Interactive.

It is a global news and business information service. It covers the humanities, science, health, education and other subjects but has a focus on business, including business news, and company and industry research.

The database integrates content from newspapers (including The Age, and The SMH), Dow Jones newswires, business journals, market research reports, analyst reports, and websites. Much of the material is available in full-text.

Coverage varies, from 1980 - .

ANZ Newsstand is an online newspaper service provided by ProQuest and covering the full-text of Australian and New Zealand newspapers.

Titles from Fairfax (including The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald) and News Ltd (including The Australian, The Adelaide Advertiser, and The Herald Sun) are included, together with transcripts and wire feeds from ABC programs, and with leading regional and local newspaper titles from Australia and New Zealand.

Coverage varies, but most newspaper content is available from the mid- to late-nineties.

afr.com is the exclusive source of full-text articles from Fairfax Business Media publications including The Australian Financial Review and Business Review Weekly, but also over twenty other Fairfax news and information sources including the major Fairfax dailies and even The New York Times.

Content from sources such as The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, and The New York Times includes all (not just Business-related) material.

afr.com also includes a range of financial charts and investment tools.

The TVNews database is a new (August 2007) Informit Media database, available via Informit Online.

It indexes Australian television news, current affairs, and selected documentaries from the free-to-air networks with links to the digitised video content in a compressed format. All individual stories from a particular broadcast are indexed with a detailed synopsis. TVNews is updated daily, with stories appearing on an evening news broadcast generally being available for access the next morning.

The video for each story or documentary is available in WMV format as a progressive download, allowing viewing to begin before the total video file is transferred. Items range from under 30 seconds for short news stories, to over an hour for selected documentaries. Transcripts are NOT included.

Coverage is from August 2007- present.

This is an index to the archive of the Sydney Morning Herald spanning the years 1955 to 1990. The archive contains 820,000 pages from almost 13,000 issues. No new material is being added to the archive.

CSU does not have access to the full-text of the archive, so it is available here as an index only.

CSU staff and students would need to locate, or request, the full-text of articles in microfilm copies of the paper held at Bathurst, Thurgoona, and Wagga Campus Libraries.

More recent material from the Sydney Morning Herald is available online in full-text in the Factiva database (from September 1986) and the ANZ Newsstand database (from 1996).
